James Maddison has assured Tottenham Hotspur supporters they’re not the only ones who are ‘hurt’ by Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool.

Spurs lost a quite ridiculous game against the Premier League leaders 6-3 and at one point even trailed 5-1 as Liverpool tore them apart.

The Lilywhites showed great courage to grab a couple of goals and almost claw themselves back into the game but just didn’t have enough to compete with the Reds.

As a result, Spurs now sit 11th in the Premier League table, eight points adrift of the Champions League spots.

Maddison has spoken out about Sunday’s result, first expressing pride in his teammates, who are battling on in the face of a chronic injury crisis.

“Busy physio room at the minute, with senior players, big experienced players that are in there,” said Maddison (via TBR). “On nights like this against the top opposition, that is invaluable really, the seniority of players and experience of Premier League big games like this.

“But credit to our young lads who are stepping up and lads who haven’t played. I don’t want to sound like I am making excuses but Djed [Spence] only started his first Premier League game last week, Archie [Gray] is 18, we bought him from the Championship, Radu [Dragusin] didn’t play a lot of football last year in the Premier League, Frase [Fraser Forster] has come in with Vic [Guglielmo Vicario] out.

“There are a lot of lads who I am proud of who keep going out because we are rolling out the same team every game at the minute because we play every three days and the squad’s quite depleted.”

But Maddison then went on to assure supporters the Spurs players are just as ‘hurt’ as they are over results like Sunday and their current form.

He added: “We will all keep going, we will stick together. I feel for the fans but I want them to know that it hurts us as well. Results like that don’t just hurt supporters, they hurt the club on a whole.”

Up next for Spurs is a Boxing Day trip to high-flying Nottingham Forest.
