“It’s difficult” – Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks reveals his confidence is at a low

By Eddie Razo -

Over the last couple of seasons, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has seen his appearances dwindle, and in 2021-22 it seems as though it will hit a new low.

The 25-year-old has only appeared in six fixtures in all competitions. Despite the change at manager going from José Mourinho to Nuno Espírito Santo hasn’t done much to rejuvenate the career of Winks with the north London-based club.

In an interview with The Evening Standard, Winks admitted that his confidence is at a low point. However, he does state that there’s no one else to blame but him, so Winks takes responsibility for his fall from grace over the past couple of seasons.

“No. No, I can’t. But listen, the circumstances are that I’m in this situation. Of course [my confidence is low]. When players are not playing well, and you only have yourself to blame, it’s difficult. I want to be at my best, firing and playing really well,” Winks said.

“It comes with games. But ultimately, it comes with me performing on the pitch when I get the opportunity. If I’m not doing that, then I only have myself to blame. I’m man enough to admit that I need to improve in certain areas. On the contrary, I need to play games, and the only way to [improve] is getting minutes and getting that sharpness back.”

Winks finds his name in the middle of transfer rumors as the January window approaches. The midfielder needs playing time to regain his confidence, and it seems as though departing on loan for six months could help him. Nonetheless, he states his love for Spurs.

“I love Tottenham, I’ve always made that clear, but I want to play football. And I want to play regular football. The only way to play your best football, get momentum is by playing regularly,” Winks said.

“I’m giving my all for the club; of course, I am. They stuck by me, I stuck by them – and I want to play for Tottenham, but it is difficult when you get matches here and there, confidence is low, and you don’t get that run of games.”

The midfielder is under contract with Tottenham until 2024.
