‘in an ideal world…’: Alasdair Gold feels 23-year-old’s future at Tottenham is now uncertain

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur defender Ryan Sessegnon recently underwent surgery after a hamstring injury and he is set for a considerable spell on the sidelines.

The 23-year-old was highly rated when he joined Tottenham from Fulham but he has not been able to live up to the expectations so far. He has had persistent injury problems and his long-term future at the club is now uncertain.

Journalist Alasdair Gold has now revealed on the Gold & Guest podcast that the defender’s contract will be up in the summer of 2025 and Tottenham are unlikely to be able to loan him out next season.

The only way Tottenham can sanction his departure on loan is if there is an option to buy.

He said (h/t TotheLaneandBack): “I think in an ideal world a loan next season probably would be great for him (Sessegnon), but like we say, if his contract ends in 2025 you can’t really do that unless there’s some kind of option to buy.”

He is unlikely to get ample first-team opportunities at Tottenham next season and it remains to be seen how the situation develops. Perhaps selling him permanently would be ideal for all parties.

Destiny Udogie has firmly established himself as the first choice left back at the club and Tottenham have Ben Davies as an alternative as well. Sessegnon has fallen down the pecking order and he needs to move on in search of regular plane time.

The 23-year-old is still young enough to improve further and fulfil his potential in the coming seasons but he needs to be at the club where he will get regular opportunities.
