Tottenham, or rather ENIC is rapidly running out of answers. We get some good performances from this squad, then the wheels dramatically fall off with all the predictability of a circus car.
Conte seemed to be channelling his inner Milton in the post Wolves presser, referring to a long road, a long path in front of us. ‘And hard that out of Hell leads up into the light‘, eh?
Pochettino ran out of steam because he needed a significant rebuild of his squad. Mourinho was clearly bewildered by what he discovered at Hotspur Way. As the ‘All or Nothing’ documentary revealed. Nuno gave a good impression of a man that went from happy-go-lucky to manic-depressive in a matter of days.
Now we have Antonio Conte admitting that this isn’t a doer-upper, this is a complete rebuild.
Big Sam has recently conducted an interview, which I received by email.
The line, at the close, suddenly resonated with me. Or does anyone believe we are better placed than to consider such a future?
Here’s the interview
I’ll never say never when it comes to another job in management because there’s always going to be something out there that would interest me, I’m sure of that.
I’ve turned down more jobs from abroad in the last two seasons than I did in the rest of my career combined. I’ve explained to every club that has been kind enough to contact me, they’re 10 years too late for me. I don’t really want to become a journeyman at 67-years-old, and above everything else, I don’t think it’s fair on my wife.
You’ve got to think about your family, and respect that they’ve allowed you to do this job for decades, traveling all over the country and, like I said, I’m sure she would’ve probably been happy for me to try and do it abroad 10 years ago, but nothing ever materialised.
So when I hear from top clubs in Greece and Turkey now, I have to politely turn them down. I can’t ask my family to pack everything up and go and live in a country where they’d be isolated.
My wife wouldn’t know anybody, she wouldn’t see anybody, and I’d be so busy at that football club, working 24/7 to find out how they operate – it would be very depressing for her, and it wouldn’t be right of me to expect that of her. It doesn’t matter what the offer is, or how well I might do at the club, it just wouldn’t be fair to put her in that position.
An international job, at my stage of life, would interest me. That role doesn’t require you to spend 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in that country. That would appeal to me. But with regard to a top job in some of those countries I’ve mentioned, it’s not for me anymore. As flattering as it is and as appreciative as I am that they’ve considered me – I think I’ve had three calls from China – it’s just not for me.
I’ve said “that’s me done and dusted” too many times over the years, so I’m never saying it again. I’ll never say never when it comes to another job in management because there’s always going to be something out there that would interest me, I’m sure of that.
And from everything I have seen written the Potter story is true.
Sensible from a pensioner I would say
I saw that too – the boy is becoming a Man U fan and his Dad is broken.
It will be Scott Parker with Ryan Mason next season. I expect a few signings but more youth dripped through looks the more likely route for ENIC’s ‘project’. Kion Etete, Alfie Devine, Tanganga, Skipp maybe Harvey White.
This is Levy lowering the expectation level in advance. I can’t believe it has taken this long for a significant minority to wake up.
It does at this point look like we’ve gone as far as we can go with Lewis as owner and are now a poisoned chalice until someone gives enic the big payoff.
Go on the Dormant Hotspur!
Makes no difference who would come in, but Sam fits the ENIC FC BILL.
It’s very interesting that I’m finding so many Spurs fans experiencing similar feelings currently. Enic and Levy are sucking the enthusiasm out of many long time spurs fans and it’s genuinely sad to see. Ive got a ticket to the Everton game next month but I will request a refund. I can do so because the match has been rearranged to a Monday night. Years ago I would never have done that.
Wrong thread
I say again the problem of Spurs is not and never had been a manager or managers. think this Leicester City won the league how many players are still in that team I say 2 to 3 players I can mention Vardy and their goalkeeper may be 2 more. how about Spurs team who finished that season 3rd place how many players are still in Spurs team from that group there is the problem, you can’t expect any manager to make a group of flopped players so many seasons as world beaters and all the Premier Leauge teams found out the easiest way to beat Spurs just press them specially their defenders and they will collapse when you can’t beat Southampton or Wolves in home do you expect me to believe that you will beat Man City or Liverpool away you must be deluded, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different result no 100 Conte can solve, Conte never asked Kulusevski or Bentancur Conte requested Luis Diaz and free Franck Kessie and Stefan de Vrij he got none of them the circle continues.
They did most of what Conte wanted(when they did something), he can’t go crucify them, they’ve all he’s got at present.
Even winks you can spot what he’s thinking he’s got to do shame it’s at a pre- school level.
It’s the switching off and ball watching he’s pulled out as the issue as he’s a mentally weak group. If he goes too hard they’ll crumble more.
I hope conte has decided to go full tilt for the FA Cup.
It was telling how long it took us to replace Mourinho. When you get turned down by Potter because he would rather stay at Brighton, then it shows the depth of the problem. The only managers who will come to Spurs would be has beens, looking for a one off payday which is always inevitable as you know you will get the sack because you won’t be backed like AVB, Redknapp, Poch, Mourinho weren’t and Conte won’t. I can’t imagine what made him sign but he will undoubtedly regret it although he will come out of it with his reputation intact. Everybody in football knows Spurs are a poisoned chalice. Having been a supporter for sixty years, I have bowed to the inevitable and accepted my fate which will endure until Enic sell up. At least I have a few good memories to look back on.
But none from Thailand, he’s gutted
Add, Curbishley, Pardew, Bruce, Redknap & Hughes to that list. I’m convinced that when Conte walks these will be our only choices.
No self respecting manager will touch us whilst ENIC & Levy are at the helm. I’m still not sure how they managed to secure Conte’s signature. My guess is the same empty promises that were likely made to his predecessors. However, the difference here is Conte is at the top of his game. Jose was treading water. Poch up coming. Conte leaves and the best will duck for cover.
It didn’t take long before even Conte started spouting nonsense. He said our performance against Wolves was one of the best since he joined and that Winks had a good game. The kicker though was his statement that CL qualification is impossible this season and this “project is a long term one”. How does that work then considering his contract is short term. I am just hoping that a bid comes in from a genuine source and ENIC decide that if Conte stays they are going to have to stump up over several hundred million to keep him and if he goes then they will be held accountable by the fan base and will have reached the end of their road in spinning continual fake news about having ambition for the football team.
Levy has to go….but he won’t! Alas, we’re stuck with this monumental f…er.
No, not a lot of joy. Myself, I’m fairly relaxed these days when it comes to actual matches, free of tension and not that bothered whether we win or lose to be honest, because in the long run it won’t make much difference. We will have our good weeks, but it all adds up eventually to the likely conclusion of another unsuccessful season. There’s no hope of actually achieving anything worthwhile so there’s nothing to get nervous about. Expect more of the same with Enic in charge.
Supporting Spurs should come with a health warning like they have on cigarette packets.
That ENIC mob are wiping out the next generation of young Spurs fan.
I saw a comment on a blog by a Spurs fan who is trying to coax his youngster into supporting Tottenham. They were watching Spurs v Southampton and the young lad said, ” no way dad, I’m not supporting that rubbish”.
Can’t really blame the lad the play ground at school can be a tough place without having to defend Spurs into the bargain.
Would you go at that stage of life, I wouldn’t.
I would welcome this appointment because it would be the final nail in Levy’s coffin when it all goes tits up
I’ve got all of these fabulous offers from all over the world but I can’t because of my wife.
Pretty sensible attitude and due consideration for his family by big Sam.
Have to agree…in all my life I never heard of a club that tried and failed to attract as many managers as we did after levy fired mourinho. It was embarrassing,
I know how you feel, over 50 years supporting this club, a club that used to excite me, even when we bought a player it would be someone I knew by name, a Klinsmann or an Ardiles , these days watching spurs is like watching formula 1 and your favourite car is Haas F1 you know deep down they will never compete with red bull or Mercedes but you just watch out of habit or if you are religious maybe a miracle….or as the yanks say a hail Mary. Thank you Enic for ruin the love of my life.
Pretty much the same from me. If Conte walks, so do I……. unless something outrageous happened like somehow we got Pep. But that won’t happen.
Unfortunately I’m in the same boat as you, I went to bed in perth Australia with a notion that we would lose on Sunday I wasn’t wrong. We have a squad that is nowhere near good enough. Conti must think they have sold me a pig in a bag. Levy has to go , his involvement in buying players is bringing dross into the club, we have had the odd success in the marketplace but mostly they are not up to it. If Conti leaves I will only have a small passing interest until we are sold which is inevitable. 60 years of my life a yid and not a lot of joy in those years.
I’m fast losing interest in Spurs by the day, and I’ve been supporting them for approaching 40 years. For me, an appointment like Alladyce could well be the final nail in the coffin for my support of the club. We have a mainly crap squad, but we have a top coach. This squad with Alladyce as manager would finally do it for me, I think.
At least the boys would get ketchup back on the menu.
It’s such a sad indictment of ENIC’s custodianship that it’s now reasonable to think that we eventually might only be able to attract management candidates from the Allardyce pool.
