“If Spurs are serious” – Football pundit names one person Tottenham needs to replace if they want to become an elite club

By Mehdi Gokal -

Former Liverpool star and current pundit Stan Collymore has urged Tottenham Hotspur chairman, Daniel Levy, to resign and make way for a footballing expert.

Collymore told Caughtoffside in an exclusive interview that if Levy does not want to sell the club, he should at least restructure the hierarchy, leaving the CEO role for a footballing person and himself in a less hands-on role.

Collymore said that Spurs are at a crossroads and that they must decide whether they want to be an elite club or just occasionally play in the Champions League.

The pundit argued that prudent spending will only take the club so far, and that “if Spurs are serious” about winning silverware, it’s time for Levy to “spend some money”.

He said:

“Spurs are at a major crossroads now.”

“They must make a decision over whether or not they want to be an elite club or a club that only sometimes plays in the Champions League. Levy can’t have his cake and eat it, and while I admire financially well-run clubs, prudent spending will only take you so far.

If Spurs are serious about becoming a competitive force and potentially winning silverware, now is the time for Levy to throw caution into the wind and spend some money. I also think he should take a step back from his role as chairman. If he won’t sell the club, or even open the door to possible investment, then he should at least look to restructure the hierarchy.

“There is no reason why he can’t be made a president and take on a more non-executive role and hire a footballing person who could become a CEO. That would make a lot of sense and I am sure it is something fans would welcome too because until they re-focus and have a fresh motivation, they’re just going to stay stuck in this perpetual cycle of just doing okay.”

Tottenham fans have previously voiced their discontent with Levy, calling for a change in ownership after being unhappy with the club’s progress under the current leadership.

Levy has been blamed for being too financially focused in his decisions

The club’s former player, Jamie Redknapp has also recently criticised Levy’s controlling approach, arguing that the culture at Spurs is not conducive to success, and it’s set from the top.
