Tottenham’s campaign took another blow with a surprising 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town, a team that had been battling in the relegation zone before their visit.

This marked Spurs’ second consecutive defeat after their Europa League setback midweek, highlighting the persistent inconsistency that has plagued them this season.

Ipswich, viewed as big underdogs, defied expectations with a determined display. Sammie Szmodics set the tone with an acrobatic overhead kick to open the scoring, and Liam Delap added a second just before half-time.

Despite Rodrigo Bentancur’s goal in the second half that gave the Lilywhites hope, Ipswich remained resolute and secured their first Premier League win of the season.

Ian Wright slams Tottenham for performance vs Ipswich

Arsenal legend Ian Wright, speaking on Premier League Productions, criticised Tottenham’s performance, remarking that it epitomised what many describe as “Spursy” — the tendency to falter in games they are expected to win, even after stringing together positive results.

Wright emphasised that this pattern of inconsistency has been a long-standing issue, preventing the Lilywhites from sustaining momentum and progress.

The pundit said:

“This is Spurs and what they do, I don’t mean that disrespectfully. When they are in a good run and you think they can put more results together, they throw a performance like this out there.”

This defeat echoed last month’s disappointing loss to Crystal Palace, where Tottenham similarly allowed their opponents to claim their first league victory of the season.

Tottenham’s poor start to the season

These recurring lapses have cost Spurs valuable points that could have propelled them up the league table. Instead, they now sit in 10th place, close to slipping into the bottom half unless results improve after the international break.

Manager Ange Postecoglou must use this break to analyse and address the team’s erratic form. They have made an awful start, with just 5 wins, 1 draw, and 5 losses from 11 league games so far, picking up only 16 points.

For context, Spurs sacked Nuno Espírito Santo, after his slow start that saw the club pick just 15 points in 10 games.

Ange will need to fix things quickly and get back to winning ways if he wants the club to finish in the top 4 this season.
