Ian Wright predicts one signing will make Tottenham title contenders

By Mehdi Gokal -

Several factors, including the ‘crazy’ impact of the World Cup, being underdogs for the Premier League title, and a January signing could work in Tottenham’s favour this season, according to Arsenal legend Ian Wright.

Tottenham have had a fantastic start to the season. They have only lost once in the league and are currently third in the Premier League, level with Manchester City and only four points behind the league leaders.

Conte has come under criticism for the unattractive football that Spurs have been playing but he is grinding out results which is all that matters. And it is the results that have Spurs right in the thick of the title race, even if they remain underdogs.

The Italian is a serial winner who has a reputation of winning trophies wherever he goes which is why he is widely backed to end Spurs’ trophy drought as well as give Arsenal and City a run for the title.

And the former Gunner turned pundit has predicted that something ‘out of the ordinary’ will happen this season in Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League title challenge.

He claimed that even though ‘nobody is talking about Tottenham too much,’ at the moment but if they continue to be neck and neck with Arsenal and Manchester City after the World Cup, things could get interesting.

He told Premier League Productions (17/10/22 at 2:10 pm) (via HITC):

“We don’t know what will happen after the World Cup and how everything will pan out, during these crazy times.”

“If they come back and are in touch. I just feel something will happen this season that’s not in the ordinary.

“He (Conte) might have a player in mind to come in (January). Them and with their fitness. Just staying amongst it.

“It feels like they are creeping up. Nobody is speaking about them too much. Everybody is talking about they aren’t this or that. You have an elite manager that has elite players.

“If that happens, where he adds a couple of players until after the World Cup and they are still in touch, then you have to start looking at Spurs because they aren’t playing unbelievable right now, but they are in touch.”

City are simply too strong at the moment, and it is rather ambitious to believe Spurs can achieve the unthinkable given the disparity in quality and the squad that they have.

But as Wright points out, a spectacular signing in January could catapult them to the next level and pose a serious threat to City. That and a whole lot of luck on their side.
