Newcastle have had an incredible start to the season, losing only once in the league, and currently sit third in the table while playing some excellent football.
And former Spurs right-back Kieran Trippier has played a huge role in it. He has played every single league game for the Magpies this season scoring 1 and assisting 3 while keeping 6 clean sheets.
His performances have earned him praise from pundits across the country including Ian Wright. The Arsenal legend claimed on the Wrighty’s House podcast that the former Spurs man is the best right-back in the league at the moment. He said:
“He’s a magnificent professional and a great player. He’s the best right-back in the country at the moment, especially with no Reece James.”
It may be especially painful for Spurs fans to see him flourish at Newcastle, given that right-back is a position in which they are struggling this season.
He was at Spurs for 4 seasons and featured for them 114 times, scoring twice and assisting 23 times during that time. He was sold to Atletico Madrid in 2019 where he helped the Spanish club win the league.
Trent Alexander Arnold who has been considered the best right-back previously has had a terrible season so far. He has been defensively caught on multiple occasions, something he has not always been great at. And his attacking abilities have not been the same this season so far either.
Kyle Walker has been out injured for the better part of the season while Reece James has not been consistent either.
Hence, Wright is perhaps right in his claim that the player has been the best in his position.
