Tottenham Hotspur are looking to improve their attacking options at the end of the season and they are keeping tabs on the Athletic Club Bilbao winger Nico Williams.
The 21-year-old has established himself as one of the most exciting young forwards in European football, and he has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks.
Journalist Dean Jones has now revealed to GMS that Tottenham are looking at the 21-year-old La Liga winger ahead of a potential summer move. However, they will need to get rid of players like Brian Gil first.
“They have been linked with Raphinha this week, and I know that they have been looking at players like Nico Williams at Athletic Bilbao as well. They’ve been linked with a couple of other players, too.”
Williams has been in fantastic form for Athletic Club Bilbao this season, scoring five goals and picking up 10 assists across all competitions. He will add pace, flair and goals to the Spurs attack if he joins the club at the end of the season.
Tottenham could certainly use more quality and depth in the side if they want to compete for major trophies next season and someone like Williams will add a new dimension to their attack. Tottenham are currently lacking specialist dribbler from the wide areas and Williams could be that player for them.
He will add explosive pace and penetration from the flanks. The Spaniard will chip in with goals as well. In addition to that, he is versatile enough to operate on both flanks as well as the false nine.
Ange Postecoglou’s attacking system would be a good fit for the young attacker and he could thrive in the Premier League. The 21-year-old has the technical attributes and the physicality to adapt to English football.
The player has a £43 million release clause in his contract and it is fair to assume that Spurs will need to trigger it in order to sign the player. It remains to be seen whether they follow up on their interest with a concrete proposal to sign Williams.
