‘I don’t think this is realistic’ – Conte issues Spurs reality check

By Saikat -

Tottenham picked up a 2-1 win over Fulham in the Premier League earlier today.

Goals from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Kane in either half sealed a vital three points for Antonio Conte’s side and Spurs are now up to third in the league table, level on points with defending champions Manchester City.

Arsenal are at the top of the table with five wins from five outings.

Meanwhile, Conte has warned that Spurs will need to remain realistic about their ambitions this season. The Italian has claimed that his side are not at the level of the other top Premier League clubs yet and the expectations need to be managed carefully.

He said to Football London: “It’s important to have great enthusiasm and be excited for the team. At the same time, I have to be realistic as last November the situation was really problematic as we lost 3-0 at home against United and then club decide to make decision. In only ten months someone think we are same level as other top teams, I don’t think this is realistic. If I want to tell you a lie, I can tell you a lie.”

Spurs have had an impressive transfer window this summer and therefore the expectations are bound to be high. However, the likes of Manchester City have a better squad at their disposal and to expect Spurs to surpass them would be a tad unrealistic.

That said, Spurs have enough quality to challenge for the title and perhaps make it to the top two as well. The likes of Liverpool and Chelsea are in a transition phase and Arsenal are lacking depth in their squad.

Spurs, on the other hand, have a world-class manager and multiple match-winners in their squad.

It will be interesting to see where Spurs end up eventually.

world class or ‘near world class’?

Lloris (wc, done it), Kane (wc, done it), Son (nwc, probably done it), Perisic (nwc, done it), Richarlison (potentially, close), Deki (potential), Romero (potential)

From what I saw with Brighton: Bissouma (potential)

Lenglet was signed by Barca for a reason…by all accounts he approached world class form for Sevilla.

The rest probably not, it would take a lot for Bentancur or Hojbjerg to go that level.

Who are the 8-9 players who could be world-class?

Marseille will definitely be an invaluable guide as to Conte’s aspirations .
I wonder if if might be an evening where front foot attacking football might be the policy .
It appears the current four vying for three positions up front are ‘gelling’ . Four up front , with Harry in the 10 role would be very inspiring and I feel would bring the required result . Its early days and a win would settle a few nerves , I still think we’re playing with the handbrake on , perhaps one or two playing with the fear of losing the place in the eleven.
Seems the City / liverpool “squad mentality ” has yet to find its way into ours ?? C O Y S !!!!

Conte says it like it is, yet the writer decides to contradict him and undermine the quote by saying that we have enough quality to challenge for the title?! Who should we listen to here, the man who coaches the players, or some mystery hack obviously paid to put positive spin on the situation. Even if it’s a complete denial of the reality?!

Utter fanny…

The Marseille and City games will tell us an awful lot – it’s a team with potential that seems to JUST ABOUT have two dependable players in every position.

To go a level up we need at all times a few players in red hot form and I’m just not seeing that yet. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility though – I think there’s about 8 or 9 players in the squad with the potential to go into world class or near world class form, some have shown it before (Kane, Lloris, Son) others are impressing sporadically
