Huge boost for Spurs in their pursuit of attacker with 22 goals and assists this season

By Mehdi Gokal -

Borussia Monchengladbach’s club director has confirmed that Tottenham target Marcus Thuram will not be signing a new contract with the club.

Thuram’s current contract is set to expire in June 2023, which means the prolific striker will be leaving on a free transfer at the end of the season.

This news has put several clubs, including Tottenham on high alert, as they have been strongly linked with Thuram. Manchester United, and Newcastle are also said to among the club who are keen on signing him.

The club director expressed disappointment that Thuram and Ramy Bensebaini, who is also set to leave on a free transfer, could not reach an agreement for a contract extension. Both players have been with Borussia Monchengladbach for the past four years and have made significant contributions on the pitch.

The director acknowledged that the club’s approach has been to develop talented players and eventually allow them to move on, but ideally with a transfer fee. However, in this case, Thuram and Bensebaini will be leaving without the club receiving any transfer fee, which is not an ideal outcome for the club.

He told the club website:

We were in open discussions with both players and knew the situation.

It is a shame that they won’t be extending their current contracts, which expire in the summer, because both of them have given us a lot from a sporting perspective over the past four years.

We also understand that our fans are disappointed that both of them aren’t staying. In the past years, it has always been part of our approach to pick up talented players, develop them further, and at a certain point in time also allow them to leave, because we can’t keep them forever.

In an ideal world, we would have picked up an attractive transfer fee. It is obviously not good that it isn’t the case this time.”

According to a report by Italian outlet CalcioMercato, Spurs were among the clubs who had made contact with the player’s representatives to discuss a potential move last month.

He could be a great addition to the Tottenham attack regardless of whether Kane stays or goes. With Richarlison struggling and Lucas Moura set to leave, Spurs will need to sign another attacker.

The Frenchman’s versatility to play on the wing as well as upfront would provide an added dimension to Spurs’ attack.

Thuram has scored 22 goals and assists in 29 appearances in all competitions for the club this season, showcasing his ability to make a difference in games.

With Thuram’s contract ending soon, clubs will likely intensify their efforts to secure his services.

Fans will be eagerly watching the developments surrounding Thuram’s future, as he prepares for his next move.
