Former Tottenham player Jamie O’Hara recently spoke out about Japhet Tanganga on talkSPORT (via HITC), expressing his disbelief that the young defender is still playing for the club.
The comments came after Tottenham’s 4-1 defeat against Leicester City, during which O’Hara watched Tanganga’s performance and was critical of his play.
The Sky Sports pundit stated that Tanganga appeared to be wearing “ice skates” during his defensive play, which he found embarrassing.
He said:
“Tanganga, how he is still playing for Tottenham, I don’t know.”
“It looks like he has got ice skates on him every time he is defending. It’s embarrassing.”
This criticism towards Tanganga seems harsh, given the limited opportunities he has had to show his abilities and the fact that it was only his second appearance in the league.
Tanganga came into the starting XI in place of the suspended Cristian Romero, and many fans and experts were eager to see how he would perform.
It is not uncommon for young and inexperienced players to struggle in their first few appearances, as they adjust to the pace and intensity of the game. This was especially true for Tanganga, who was thrown into the deep end against a strong Leicester City side.
