‘Hot-headed’ Tottenham star apologises for his actions during the Arsenal defeat

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham striker Richarlison has apologised to Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli for ignoring him during yesterday’s tense North London Derby.

Spurs had a day to forget yesterday as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of their arch-rivals Arsenal.

Antonio Conte’s men started the game slow as they have most of the season and conceded two early goals. The first one came from a horrendous Hugo Lloris error and Martin Odegaard scored a stunning second from outside the box.

And Spurs players were clearly not enjoying the humiliation. At one point when Arsenal’s Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli went over to take a corner, he offered a handshake to his compatriot Richarlison who was warming up on the sidelines. But Richarlison snubbed the handshake leaving the Arsenal man all awkward.

However, he has now come and apologised and revealed why he snubbed the handshake from Martinelli. He said (via Metro):

‘It was a foul there that the referee ended up giving, we were close to the move, in my opinion, it wasn’t, I told him he was diving a lot, so I didn’t shake his hand.

‘I’m apologising to him. Like it or not, he’s my teammate. It’s part of the game, it’s a derby, we were hot-headed.’

He was also involved in an altercation with Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale after the final whistle.

Richarlison has always been a fiery player who wears his heart on his sleeve and is frequently chastised for it. Even during his time at Everton, he was frequently at the centre of controversy, particularly in Merseyside derbies.
