Tottenham’s season hit yet another setback with a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round, further compounding their recent struggles.

This loss followed a heavy 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final, effectively ending Spurs’ hopes for domestic silverware. Despite showing flashes of promise, Tottenham’s performance at Villa Park highlighted their ongoing issues, with critical moments proving decisive.

One such instance involved captain Heung-min Son, who passed to Yves Bissouma instead of taking a clear shot on goal during the second half.

Former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe shared his disappointment during BBC Sport’s coverage, expressing surprise at Son’s hesitation. Defoe noted that Son, typically a reliable and fearless finisher, appeared lacking in confidence—a stark contrast to his usual self.

The former England international urged the South Korean star to return to basics and embrace his role as a leader on the pitch.

Defoe said:

“You expect him [Son] to shoot there, I was surprised, I couldn’t believe it – I mean in the studio here we shouted shoot.

“You know, he’s so good with both feet, even change the angle and get a shot on that, but listen, we’ve all been there, everyone who’s played the game you’ve had periods when you’re not playing well.

“And at times you do hide, but then sometimes it’s about going back to basics, you stick together as a group.”

Heung-min Son has struggled this season

Son’s struggles were evident throughout the match. In the first half, he squandered a golden opportunity, firing a close-range shot straight at goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. Despite playing the entire game, Son had the fewest touches of any outfield player, with just 23, missed a big chance, and failed to make the most of his 0.50 xG.

Despite these difficulties, Son has had a decent season, netting 10 goals and providing 8 assists in 33 appearances. However, the toll of continuous play is evident, and the forward seems in need of rest.

His future at the club is under uncertainty with reports suggesting that the club will be considering selling him at the end of the season.

Manager Ange Postecoglou’s ability to rotate the squad has been severely hampered by an extensive injury list, which includes key attacking options like Dominic Solanke, Richarlison, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner, and Wilson Odobert.

As Tottenham navigate this tough time, much will depend on how players like Son regain their form and step up to lead the team through mounting challenges.
