“He’s out of his depth” “…bought a dud” Spurs’ New Recruit Is Failing To Impress Some Fans

By The Boy -

Ryan Sessegnon arrived with an injury, something that was obviously beyond his control. Regrettably, the boy’s supposedly enjoying full fitness after extensive use of Hotspur Way, and he still looks a million miles away from the required standard. In fact, I’d say he looks worth a fraction of the £25million that Spurs paid Fulham for the lad. Early days of course, but this looks like another diabolical deal.

I take a view at the 20-year-old desperately needs to be loaned out; it appears not to be lack of opportunity at Tottenham that will hold him back, but his current levels authority on the pitch. Apologists will reiterate his age and his injury, however there’s unmistakable ordinariness about this kid one has to wonder who flagged Ryan up and who sanctioned the deal. My guess is that unlike Harry Kane, we won’t be fending off a stream coaches and scouts who claim to have recommended this Roehampton born boy.

I wish him well, but so far, I have to concur with these fans, he’s miles away from being a Premier League footballer, miles.

I read what you read, Levy had to take out a huge loan to keep the club afloat, did he not ? That tells me there was no decent amount of transfer funds available for such signings. We all know how ENIC and Levy works by now, they wont invest their dosh into the club, therefore being mindful of that, I take this into account when I offer my comments. Consequently, under such circumstances I think the players brought in are very clever indeed .

You don’t think Poch would have taken a better fullback than Aurier?

Why are we talking about any player that is a step above what we have or on a par with the quality of Kane or Son as ‘extravagant’? What on earth does ‘extravagant mean in this context exactly? Fernandez has improved Utd markedly, Dybala is a quality forward and Coutinhio would have been a loan.

When you have an owner worth 7bn buying players to compete with your rivals isn’t an extravagance, it’s a necessity. The fact sone of our fans feel we need to run our football budget at least 10x below that of our rivals, just shows how brainwashed ENIC have made a large section of our support…

I admire your optimism James, but alas, the prolonged and as-usual protracted chase for this kid has probably ruined his career. Memories of Saido Berrahino who had the world at his feet until Don Levy came along and blasted his career into shit (albeit partly his own doing).
Sessegnon had the ability to develop with the right moves at the right time for him. Instead he’s busted his ass for a dream move to Spurs and found himself on Nowhere Street with no chance of a start and a spell as a bit-part player. Silly boy.

I would prefer to be positive as I was during Poch’s tenure as I think we played good football and were respected by other teams. I believe that qualifying for the CL four times and reaching the final once were achievements not to be sneezed at when you consider where we were before he came to the club. I know that he had his faults and after more than five years , it was time for him to move on, but he deserves more respect that you give him. You will be relieved to know that this will be my last post of this evening as I am tired and need to go to bed, but I am sure that you cannot help replying as I have noticed that you like having the last word.

It seems clear they didn’t happen, because we didn’t have the kind of money for such extravagant signings, as good as they could have been. Those players that were brought in were a gamble, which looks as though they are not going to work out. In stark contrast to the three brought in this summer , I’m including Doherty in that, who are certain to prove decent signings, have cost pennies in comparison, and Poch wouldn’t have even considered them.

Completely agree. After over five years to working for Levy which must be akin to having a colonoscopy every day of the week, it is hardly a surprise towards the end of his tenure that he became disillusioned. When he was asked if he was happy at a news conference if, what was he expected to say? He would probably be in breach of contract if he had said anything else. Levy let him down, not the other way round,. If there is a criticism of Poch it was that he was too nice and that he was taken in by Levy but I can live with that.

This is the whole point about our transfer ‘policy’, if there even is one.

Firstly we achieved the feat of being the only club in any of the world’s top divisions to sign nobody for 12 months. So we were desperate for reinforcements and some ‘churn’. We had been going stale for over a year before the Champions League final.

Rather than bring in match-ready fully functioning Premiership level players we brought in only three players last summer, none of whom were ready to play Premiership football, for whatever reason.

Tanguy, Gio and Sess were the three and only Gio has contributed anything whatsoever this last season. This is what Levy did to back Pochettino last summer. Dybala, Fernandes and Coutinhio should have been brought in too and predictably for some reason they didn’t happen. It was at this point Poch realized his time was up at Spurs. If you aren’t backed after doing what he’d done over 5 seasons, then it was never gonna happen…

Firstly, I did not use the word stealing, so please be a little bit more precise in your phraseology as the apologist for twenty years of misery under Enic. What I attempted to explain to you was that at around the time that Poch advised the board to be brave, there was approximately £350 mill of cash on the balance sheet. This money was then diverted towards funding part of the new stadium instead of funding new recruitment. This was a diametrically different policy to Fenway Sports Group who decided to achieve on field success before funding the expansion of Anfield. I know which policy I prefer.

You generally get a bonus in any organisation for achieving results in excess of your brief. I don’t think that going 100% over budget and one year late for delivery merits a bonus. Who is on the remuneration committee, I wonder? Taking season ticket holders money for the new stadium knowing that It was not going to be ready in time is another prime example of Levy’s duplicitousness

There is no scouting team to speak of and hasn’t been for some years. When you are the CEO of a large corporation, whether public or private, you are accountable for the results. He is on record as being responsible for all signings which he freely admits. Do you think that any other CEO in the PL waits until the end of transfer day to try and get a bargain from Real Madrid or PSG? Who has sacked ten managers, innumerable coaching and scouting staff during his tenure? Has Paul Mitchell flourished since he was put on gardening leave by Levy?

What a daft comment. Levy isn’t a scout, he just negotiates the deals for players who are recommended by the coaching and scouting teams. His recod int eh transfer market is that he spent £400m whilst Poch was in charge. The fact that most of the players bought were crap isn’t his fault at all.

Stephen Duke

Another example of Poch’s abysmal judgement int he transfer market. People blame Levy for not spending money, the truth is that Poch spaffed 300m up the wall on rubbish players like Ndombele, Sessegnon, Sanchez, etc.

We can debate all we like on this site and agree to disagree which is the way it should be but if Levy is going to continue his spin as the master negotiator who never blinks during a deal, he should take the blame as well for his awful track record in the transfer market. As the highest paid chairman in the PL, it is high time he delivered. He’s had twenty years to deliver and has failed miserably. He has made money for Enic and himself but what has he really delivered to the fans. Say what you like about that lot up the road, at least under Wenger they had many successful years whilst Levy was hiring and firing managers at will. His attempted furloughing of the staff was pathetic and his treatment of Haringey council over the food storage was beneath the pail. Professional football should not just be about money, but that is his all consuming god. He might be a good property speculator, although one has to ask the question as to the future viability of shopping complexes, but as a football administrator, he is utterly incompetent.
