TalkSport pundits have slammed Tottenham defender Cristian Romero for his “scandalous” defending during Tottenham’s 4-3 loss to Liverpool on Sunday.
The game started terribly for Tottenham as they conceded three goals within the first 15 minutes, with Romero and Eric Dier struggling to contain Liverpool’s attacking prowess.
Romero was particularly criticised for his performance, which included a reckless challenge on Cody Gakpo that led to a penalty, allowing Mo Salah to score Liverpool’s third goal.
Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan criticised Romero’s defending, stating that he was better than the job he was currently doing with Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking on White And Jordan, he said:
“Cristian Romero, to me, is scandalous at this moment in time.
“He’s a good player, there’s no doubt about it, but I was talking to someone the other day about the feeling that he’s better than the job he’s currently doing with Tottenham Hotspur.”
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown also criticised Romero, stating that he had lost his head and needed someone to talk to him.
He added:
“He’s lost his head, hasn’t he? Someone has to get in his ear and tell him.
“He was a Rolls Royce defender there at one stage and now he wants to win every single ball.
“It’s like he’s trying to misbehave so badly that he’s just going to cut him loose and take him out of there.”
Romero has been one of Tottenham’s best defenders since joining the club, but his performances have been inconsistent since returning from the World Cup as winner of the competition, with his game being much more rash now.
Despite Tottenham showing incredible character and fighting spirit to come back from three goals down and equalise in stoppage time, their hearts were broken when Lucas Moura’s mistake resulted in a Diogo Jota winner just a minute later.
Tottenham’s defence has been a cause for concern for some time, with the likes of Eric Dier and Ben Davies deemed not good enough to compete with the top teams.
Tottenham will need to invest in defenders during the summer if they want to compete with the best teams in the Premier League.
