“He’s doing what he’s always done” – Richard Keys launches scathing attack on Spurs man

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to beIN Sports presenter Richard Keys, Jose Mourinho would be slammed if he was ‘serving up’ what Antonio Conte is doing at Tottenham.

Spurs bounced back from a defeat in the north London derby with a 1-0 win against Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday.

TalkSport pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor had ripped into Tottenham’s style of play after their draw against German side Frankfurt in the Champions League. The former Aston Villa man labeled Conte’s tactics as ‘boring’ and claimed that his style of play is similar to Mourinho’s Tottenham.

And now Richard Keys has slammed Conte’s style of play in his latest blog.

He wrote: “I still think Arsenal will come up short – but we need them to be nipping away at City. We need Spurs to keep winning as well, but watching them is really hard work. I said on beINSPORTS Saturday that if Mourinho was serving up what Conte is he’d be slaughtered.

I’m not criticising Conte. He’s doing what he’s always done and Spurs need to be tougher, but when Mourinho did the same thing at Tottenham he was labelled a dinosaur. Conte is supposedly a tactical genius.”

Spurs created only one big chance against Brighton, while their opponents finished with more expected goals, forcing Lloris to make four saves. Regardless, Tottenham took all three points, which has become a recurring theme for the club this season. However, it remains to be seen whether or not that style of play is sustainable or even acceptable to supporters.

He practically signed for Roma the day after he was sacked. You can already rule out Manure and Cheatski for obvious reasons, and the others weren’t vacant at the time. Looks like he did the right thing; one trophy so far. If he wins the EL this season the pundits will have to revisit their ‘dinosaur’ remarks

Man U, Chelsea, Juve, Milan, PSG, jobs have come available since Spurs exit and he ends up at Roma, he is no longer considered a great manager

Maureen was thrown under the bus by day one. No manager would make top four having to rely on Winks, Sanchez, Ndombele etc as starters. His style of play was never the problem, he simply inherited an awful squad. From watching the documentary I just knew he was a great manager. I sincerely hope he wins something big with Roma just to have more fingers pointed at Levy

Simple Jose kept losing, Conte got top four in half a season but in theory
a point well made it is hard watching

I think that people would have been more forgiving of Mourinho if he had kept Spurs in the top 4 slot.
Also… there are some differences between Mourinho and Contes training in that ‘reputedly’ Mourinho focussed heavily on defence and encouraged the attackers to just improvise when they went forward.
Conte apparently drills a lot more possible scenarios, including transitions and the follow-through attack.
Given Spurs still has a reasonable ‘goals for’ and the occasional ‘battering’ of lesser opponents shows, I think, there is a touch more ‘attack-minded’ with Conte than Mourinho.
The fact that we are getting a lot of stifling matches won by a one goal margin (against usually strong opponents) shows Conte wants to play very defensive as a default against such teams… which isn’t bad per se… against a strong team we can’t show-boat… we just gotta win.
Unfortunately Conte nor Mourinho had the full transfer backing they really wanted to transform the team. But … IF.. Conte is here this time next year he might have a few more slots (RWG, AM, etc) strengthened enough to pus on past ‘just reaching top four’
