‘He’s a proper player’: Former PL manager questions Postecoglou decision regarding Tottenham ace

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has struggled for regular game time at the North London club this season.

The 29-year-old was expected to move on at the start of the season, but he ended up staying at the club.

Dier was expected to get a run out against Aston Villa at the weekend, especially with summer signing Micky van de Ven injured and vice-captain Cristian Romero sidelined with suspension. However, manager Ange Postecoglou chose to start the likes of Emerson Royal and Ben Davies at the heart of his defence and his decision will certainly come as a devastating blow for the England international.

Dier was a much more natural replacement for the likes of Van de Ven and Romero and he would have expected to play in their absence. The decision shows that the manager does not trust the 29-year-old England international, and that should pretty much seal his fate at the North London club.

It will be interesting to see if Eric Dier can secure an exit from Tottenham during the January transfer window. He needs to play regularly at this stage of his career and he is unlikely to get that opportunity at the Premier League club.

Meanwhile, former Premier League manager, Alan Pardew was sympathetic towards the Tottenham defender and claimed that he has made some errors in the past but he is a proper defender and he should be getting starts for the North London club.

“I don’t really know where the Dier thing is, actually. I know he’s made some errors in the past. But he’s a proper player,” Pardew said on talkSPORT (26 November, 6 pm).

“He’s of a standard where you would expect him to get a start.”

Dier has been a useful servant for the club over the years, but he has fallen out of favour with the new manager and it makes sense for all parties to go separate ways.
