“…he is giving us what we wanted” Mourinho Provides Hope To Struggling Spurs New Boy

By The Boy -

I was unaware that Carlos Vinicius didn’t have any English prior to landing in North London, which does make you wonder what these kids put themselves through in order to progress their careers. We all know about the exorbitant salaries that can be commanded, but the day-to-day reality of moving to the other side of the world isn’t something most people are too familiar with.

Jonathan Veal for Press Association Sport spoke with José Mourinho about the boy.

With 7 Europa League games under his belt, which have generated 6 goals and 3 assists, we have been shown some promise, but as yet, having Harry Kane ahead of him in the pecking order is one hell of an immovable object.

In the Premier League minutes that the 25-year-old has been able to secure, the results have been less encouraging. In the 6 top-flight matches the Brazilian has featured in, he’s only played over 20minutes on two occasions. Also, there have been no goals and no assists.

Whatever Vinicius’ weaknesses, they are quite possibly overshadowed by the complex nature of being the English captain’s understudy.

25 is no spring chicken in footballing terms, but he’s by no means the worst 2nd striker we’ve ever had. The idea that anyone “good” will come and do what he’s doing is a pipe dream.

Could well be a second season success, or at least bridges the gap until young Captain Scarlett comes of age!

We have to be careful with the ‘not used to the language, culture’ argument that lingers around players who quite frankly aren’t that good (quite common for Spurs-N’Jie, N’Koudou, Ndombele, Vinicius, Janssen). Fernandhino, Dias, Cavani, Kante, Soyouncu, Pereira, Mahrez, Bruno Fernandes to name a few recent players, didn’t have an issue, mainly because they are a better quality player. Football is an international language, so if you can’t trap a bag of cement in England, the same applies to Portugal or Brazil.

I don’t think we play to Vinicius’ strengths, such as crossing the the ball in the air, but our lads, Doherty especially can’t get the ball in the air!!!! I understand he is working on this by training with Tottenham’s U/10s, so hope is not lost. Do we class Doherty in the same boat as Vinicius? What is Winks’ and Dier’s issue? Simply some players are good enough, some aren’t.

He looks pretty good in and around the box…it was his hold up play that was lacking ,the ball bounced off him too many times.
