Brentford crashed to a comprehensive defeat against Liverpool at the weekend and former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf slammed the performance of on-loan Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon.
The 27-year-old left-back is currently on loan at Brentford so that he can play regularly and he has done reasonably well since joining the club. However, he had a role to play in the opening goal of the game scored by Darwin Nunez.
The Uruguayan international managed to chip the ball into the back of the net after he was sent through on goal by Diogo Jota. The Portuguese international nodded a long ball from Virgil van Dijk onto the path of Nunez, who finished calmly.
Before Jota found Nunez with his smart header, he was being chased by Reguilon who had to win the ball in order to prevent Liverpool from scoring the opening goal of the game. However, the Spanish defender failed to win the ball as the last Brentford player on the edge of the box.
Leboeuf feels that the 27-year-old defender did not give it his best shot and he could have done more to prevent the goal.
Speaking to ESPN, he said: “I never felt they were in danger, they were strong defensively, they knew how to play. As the guys said, they had so many gifts from Brentford.
“The first goal, you have to see how Reguilon tries to defend. He doesn’t even try to go for the header with Jota. Jota does very well, he’s very clever, he knows exactly what he has to do. But Reguilon doesn’t know anything about what he has to do. He tries to kick the ball with his left foot where the ball is in the air. So it’s a nightmare.”
Reguilon will know that he could have prevented the goal with a bit more effort and he will be disappointed with his own performance. The Spaniard has had a tough time since he moved to the Premier League and it remains to be seen whether he can impress with Brentford in the coming weeks and secure a permanent exit from Tottenham.
