Harry Redknapp feels Ange Postecoglou’s first season at Tottenham was very average.
The former Celtic boss who took charge of the North London club last summer helped them secure Europa League football for next season. Things could have ended up much better but a dip in form towards the end of the season cost them a top-four finish.
While they have been playing an attacking and attractive brand of football under the Australian manager, the early exits in cup competitions along with the fact they missed out on UCL football are major reasons why former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has termed Postecoglou’s debut season as mediocre.
The 77-year-old said via Football London: “I like Ange Postecoglou very much. I like him an awful lot. But what do I make of the season? Very average, it was a very average season – going out early in both cups and not finishing in the top four with that squad. I wouldn’t say it was a fantastic season.
“At the beginning of the season, I really couldn’t see Spurs being out of the top four, I thought that the team, the players, would make the top four for sure this year and maybe even win a cup but Tottenham went out early in both domestic competitions. I couldn’t say it was a great season and I’d be lying if I said it was.”
Towards the end of last the summer window, Tottenham parted ways with Harry Kane. Despite losing their record goal scorer, they decided against signing a replacement. Redknapp feels Spurs had the squad to finish in the top four despite losing Kane. He expected them to do much better in cup competitions as well.
There is no doubt that Spurs have been playing quality football under Postecoglou, but they need to translate that into results now. A top-four finish will be a must for them now and heading into next season, Redknapp expects the former Celtic boss to build on his debut season and ensure they push for trophies as well.
