Graham Potter The 9th Gaffer To Swerve Spurs Job

By The Boy -

Cats are said to have nine lives, which raises the rather unnerving question, ‘how many managers can snub Daniel Levy before his time as Tottenham’s CEO is up?’ The Spurs supremo is currently nursing his 9th rejection, according to Paul Jiggins of the Sun online.

Brighton and Hove Albion boss, Graham Potter is said to be the latest ‘thanks, but no, thanks’ received by the under-fire chairman.

I take a view that the task of filling the hot seat at Tottenham is now well beyond the usual accusations of chaos and, and is now surely one of the most unwanted roles in top-flight football.

All those who snapped and snarled at José Mourinho’s heels during his time at Hotspur Way might well take time to draw a breath and see how the footballing world has viewed his dismissal. Unlike some of the unkind and vexatious supporters out there, it looks very much like the job is not regarded as being a tad toxic.

If the ‘Special One’ was unable to affect any of his influence with Levy, then how might less successful coaches?

Perhaps one of those tarpaulin banners needs to be tied to the outside of the stadium, ‘New Manager Required – Apply Within?

I think you’re warmer than many might think with Martinez.

I reckon some of them want facts about transfer budgets, wage structure. I mean I don’t think bringing in a DOF helps the situation at all. Just another reason to swerve it!

I think this shambles in front of us shows what idiots Jose bashers are.

I take the view that Potter and many that “pulled out” from the runnings were never invited in the first place for an interview. Jose was gawd aweful with that defensive minded play without the ball tactic. That is the on field reality many here do not want to come to grip with. He, jose said it whether to please Levy or not. He was happy with the team assembled having the good problem of 2 players deep. It turn out the players were either unmotivated or just not good enough. I will go with they were not good enough physically and mentally to execute the demand of Jose. That being said, since I can only witness for myself the players coming and going, the on field play, I split the blame on both Levy and Jose. I think Levy is sitting around hoping Belgium lose which did not happen. We are closer to Mason now than we are to Nuno which either way is a travesty for the club.

Would even Martinez want to put up with having no say in transfers and Levy’s micromanaging and other restrictions.

I’ve been worried it might be Martinez since Jose got sacked. If he is on the list it wouldn’t make sense to interview the others whether the rumours are true or false.
Maybe Toby gave him good feedback, who knows? But for a manager who’s looking to get back into club management, Spurs could be perfect. This looks like a very logical Levy move. Sad times.

Hahaha fair point but I think his contract expires after the euros so don’t write it off

Fair play if true, he has rightly decided he would like his next job to be in a supportive environment where he actually gets to make some decisions, and for a chairman with realistic expectations who wont sack him 18 months from now because he didn’t get top 4 with a squad that got the last 2 managers sacked, and has been stripped of it’s only world class player.

Pretty sure if my “stock was high” like Potter’s is in terms of being roundly regarded as having done a great job with a small team, I wouldn’t be rushing off to Spurs either.

I’d be waiting for the Leicester job to crop up!

It’s hard for Levy to enter into serious talks with anyone, as those that do answer their phones probably say “thanks but no thanks” and put the phone down. The job is a poison chalice and Levy has made it so toxic due to his smothering behaviour down the years that nobody wants it. Who wants to work for a psychotic control freak?

What are odds on Winks, Dele and Dier being on starting team sheet against Man City, with Roden and Ndembele checking car permits in the Directors carpark.

Talks are talks whether preliminary or otherwise. The reason they only ever got to that stage (if they did, we have no way of knowing), is because the candidate didn’t want the job = rejection of Daniel Levy.
Who in their right mind is going to work under that little troll?

Surely the Potter rejection is born from the fact that Spurs have not entered into any serious talks with him.
Similar to Lopetegui.
Both may have been considered but that’s probably as far its got.
The search is dragging on but until the Euros are finished a number of players won’t be around and there are a number of managerial candidates of sides still in the competition, such as Martinez, so a new manager might not be announced for a week or so.

It will absolutely not be Martinez – watch the documentary, he is integral to the whole infrastructure of the Belgian setup, they clearly respect him and basically let him do what he wants.

NO WAY he swaps that for Levy.

Personally, my money is between Martinez or Mason(considering we might not end up with anyone, as it is has become evident that anyone taking the job now would not have been top choice anyway)

A good public bashing in the centre circle is what this squad needs

C’mon Potter is out of our league now. We’re more Phil Brown material 😉
Southend would probably let him go for a price Levy will accept.

Every managers outlook goes something like this…..

Before signing: “It’s a great club with a great history, it must be possible to turn this around…”

A few weeks into the job: “ooooooh, it’s a front for a property and real estate racket…better get on to my agent”

I feel many of these candidates have just been talked about as ‘offered’ the job only to reject it. As much as I can’t abide either Levy or his penny pinching micromanagement , I’m fairly sceptical about the idea that any more than about two have been actually offered the position so far.

Conte has since said that any talks with Spurs were very much exploratory and didn’t get very far down the line at all. Yet the media had him at Hotspur Way lined up with 8 backroom staff demanding a signed guarantee that Kane wasn’t sold along with a 300m war chest. Pen poised over the contract.

This still doesn’t make it any less embarrassing because many of the people that Spurs might merely be considering would rather sit tight and stay put where they are. Either because they’re happy, or because they’d rather wait for a decent job offer from a club, rather than a venture capital group looking for another actor to front up their charade.

I feel many of these talks have been preliminary at best, even so, we need a manager and nothing is happening and you get the impression that the next incumbent will be a second rate punt. I just think the hysteria around the idea of seven managers walking out of Levy’s office without signing is slightly childish…
