Gold confirms Spurs have held talks with 25-year-old; talks are progressing

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur are currently in discussions with their backup goalkeeper Brandon Austin regarding a contract extension.

This recent development has surfaced due to Spurs’ limited number of senior club-trained players eligible for European football registration.

The Lilywhites must adhere to UEFA’s squad composition rules, and Austin is one of only five club-trained players, alongside Alfie Whiteman, Oliver Skipp, Troy Parrott, and Japhet Tanganga.

Spurs in talks with Brandon Austin over a new deal

According to Tottenham correspondent for Football London, Alasdair Gold, Spurs have held talks with Brandon Austin over a new contract. It is said that the club and the player both are optimistic about finalising the new deal, with talks progressing behind the scenes..

The 25-year-old goalkeeper has stepped up as the backup option due to Fraser Forster’s ankle injury and is hopeful about his chances of showcasing his quality when the opportunity arises.

Austin hasn’t featured at all in the ongoing campaign, but the potential contract extension development suggests that he’s in the club’s plans.

Spurs would also be inclined to retain the Englishman, not only as a second-choice goalkeeper but also because he fulfils the aforementioned club-trained player spot required for registration in European competition.

Among the current five Lilywhites players, the futures of Tanganga and Parrott, who are both on loan, appear uncertain, and a departure could be likely.

In that scenario, Austin could prove valuable for Tottenham, having been a regular member of the squad since 2019.
