“going to get sent off” – Former Tottenham man is worried about one player ahead of the Liverpool game

By Mehdi Gokal -

Jamie Redknapp, former Tottenham player and now a pundit, has criticised Argentine centre-back Cristian Romero for being too rash in defence.

Speaking on Sky’s Essential Football Podcast ahead of Tottenham’s game against Liverpool, Redknapp expressed his concerns about the team’s defensive capabilities.

Redknapp said:

“Defensively I worry about them. They’ve conceded too many goals. Romero, he looks like he’s giving away goals every game with mistakes. He’s too rash. Every time I watch him I think he’s going to get sent off. And this is the sort of game (against Liverpool) where you can see him making a mistake again.”

Despite Redknapp’s criticism, Romero is currently Tottenham’s best defender. However, he has struggled in recent games, as have other members of the defence.

Tottenham currently have the worst defence among the top-half teams in the Premier League, with recent performances, in particular the 6-1 loss to Newcastle, highlighting the team’s weaknesses at the back.

Eric Dier in particular has had a poor season, and has shown that he is no where good enough to play for Tottenham.

They will need to spend significantly to strengthen their defence during the summer transfer window and have been linked with defenders Alessandro Bastoni and Stefan de Vrij in previous transfer windows under former manager Antonio Conte.

However, with Conte gone and a new manager yet to be named, it remains to be seen who will be the top choices to shore up Tottenham’s defence.

Tottenham fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Manchester United on Sunday, earning a crucial point in their bid for a top-four finish. However, their next game against Liverpool will be another crucial test for their defence.
