“Give it a bit of heart.” Former international manager identifies position Spurs need to strengthen

By Bruce Grove -

Former Scotland manager, Alex McLeish has urged Spurs to sign a new midfielder who is a good passer of the ball.

Spurs have struggled to get balls to their strikers inside the opposition box this season.

It is one reason the Lilywhites have so few goals even though the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are prolific scorers.

Although Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli are all members of the current Tottenham squad, McLeish believes the team is still lacking in creativity.

“Tottenham need a new body in that engine room,” he told Football Insider.

“I think they need a real leader who can drive that team forward and give it a bit of heart.

“A real good passer of the ball, someone who you could say was blessed with natural ability.

“I think that is what Tottenham need. Those attackers are so starved of service sometimes.

“Wolves did it well. When Nuno went to Wolves, they brought in some really good, technical, Portuguese players if you remember.

“That gave them an edge. I’m just wondering if Paratici and Conte could do something similar.

“They don’t have to be Portuguese of course, but those kinds of players have to be on the club’s wishlist.

“It’s an exciting time, we really don’t know what they are going to do.”

The Boy Hotspur Say

Spurs poor form in this campaign is worrying considering the quality of players in the squad.

Some clubs above the Lilywhites on the league table are not packed with as much quality.

As McLeish rightly pointed out, creativity has been a major issue and Spurs fans always disclosed their displeasure when Nuno Espirito Santo packed his midfield with defensive-minded players.

Conte knows he needs to change that, but can he get enough creativity from the likes of Lo Celso and Ndombele?

Everyone would be handed chances to prove they can fill that role. If they cannot, the club needs to bring in a quality creative midfielder, even though that would be hard to pull off in the January transfer window.

McLeish who had his players do a lap of honour when they won a corner.

Could it be the blue shirt.. ? What a muddle Spurs are in ..the reality is quality costs….Are we ready to play with the big boys or is it all about an elite manager over the 2 or 3 elite players the Spurs squad desperately need.
Pleased for Harry tonight ..I think he should of gone in the summer hey ho…
Spurs really need to look to the future,..hanging onto the past has got us nowhere,..hopefully Conte will be the spark and the glue that brings it all together..I haven’t seen footwork like that for Kane’s second England goal this season for Spurs..

Godd-mn carthorse striker puts in three and an assist, I see. Albania are no world beaters but let’s stop pretending Kane doesn’t know how to score anymore.

Feed him and he will score goals the way he’s always done. Simple.

With Kane, it is a question of service. We are close to the bottom of the league for chances created. Having Lewandowski up there wouldn’t change a thing right now.

Creativity has only been a problem for this last three years. Give Levy a chance, these things take time.

Two goals for Harry Kane already. So it just shows what a bit of half decent service can do for him.

Our transitions are far too slow. Romero looks to pass forward as does Reggy. We do miss Tobys occasional long balls too, he could pick out a winger or striker at the other end of the pitch no problem… We need to work harder and faster on and off the ball.. Against the toffees there was immediate improvement, players were passing the ball and running into space creating triangles (basics), but still reverting to type and going sideways and backwards.. As well as a quality striker to compliment and back up Kane, we are crying out for a quality centre mid who can boss, create and score.
