Gareth Southgate discusses Harry Kane becoming the England national team’s all-time leading goal scorer

By Eddie Razo -

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane scored his 49th goal for the England national team, moving the 28-year-old into second place, tying Sir Bobby Charlton, after he scored the Three Lions’ winner in Saturday’s 2-1 friendly victory over Switzerland at Wembley Stadium.

Kane’s goal saw the Spurs striker leapfrog Gary Lineker on 48 goals and now needs another goal to have sole possession of second place. Now Kane will have his eyes on Wayne Rooney, who sits atop the England national team’s top scorer list with 53.

It’s only a matter of time before Kane has that record, and manager Gareth Southgate would like to see the striker break the record at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, preferably in a final for the Three Lions.

“The names he is in and amongst now are incredible,” Southgate said to Sky Sports. “Harry will appreciate that history; it will mean a lot to him to be in and amongst those names. You have to say he looks favourite to go and do that [break the record]. I don’t want to put any sort of curse on that by saying anymore.”

“He wants the team to do well as well; he’s got this dual drive which means that whenever he turns up, he’s got individual ambition, and there is never a camp where he looks like he doesn’t want to play. That mentality spreads through the rest of the group. I would like him to break the record in the World Cup final!”

At 28-years-old Kane has at least another UEFA Euros and World Cup in his future if health and form permit to go along with the qualifying fixtures for those tournaments to add some goals to his lead when he eventually does take over first place.
