Four man transfer shortlist prepared by Spurs under new sporting director ahead of January transfer window

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur’s plans for the January transfer window have become clearer, with a focus on strengthening their defensive options.

While their current center-back partnership of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero has been impressive, the lack of squad depth in defense remains a concern.

The departures of players like Joe Rodon, Djed Spence, Japhet Tanganga, Davinson Sanchez, and Sergio Reguilon in the summer left manager Ange Postecoglou with limited backup options in defense.

Eric Dier and Ben Davies are the only alternatives with Dier too linked with a January exit. This lack of depth has prompted the club to seek reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window.

According to GiveMeSport, Spurs have identified a four-man shortlist of defenders.

Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth, who was linked with the club in the summer, is one of them.

His contract expiring next summer could make him an attractive option, with Bournemouth potentially open to cashing in on him.

Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, who was also linked with Spurs in the summer, remains on their radar as well.

They did not make an offer for him back then due to Palace’s high asking price.  And this might remain a challenge in January. Recent report also claims that The Eagles are close to agreeing new a new deal with him.

Another name on the list as per the report is Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah who is expected to leave the club in January.

His versatility makes him an interesting option given that he can also play in midfield, another area where Tottenham seriously lack depth.

And lastly, the report claims that Borussia Monchengladbach ace Ko Itakura has left Tottenham impressed and while an offer is not imminent, he is being monitored.

He too can play both as a defender and a midfielder and could be a great addition to the midfield.

Tottenham are currently top of the table with a 2 point lead over Arsenal and 5 point lead over Manchester City.

But if they want to continue to compete with these teams over the entirety of the season, they need to add more players to the squad.

The January transfer window could end up being a crucial period for Spurs.
