Former Tottenham ace reckons Spurs have to do this one thing to keep Harry Kane

By Bruce Grove -

Former Tottenham striker Les Ferdinand has challenged Spurs to step up to the level of Harry Kane and help the England captain to win trophies so that he will remain with them.

The Englishman has become one of the most lethal strikers in world football and several top European teams are reported to be circling around him.

He has remained a Spurs man, and he even led them to the final of the Champions League last year.

However, Kane has claimed recently that Spurs would have to match his ambitions to keep him because he won’t just stay with them for the sake of it.

He has won individual honours like the Premier League’s Golden Boot, but he lost the League Cup final in 2015 and the Champions League final last year to remain trophyless as a Spurs player.

Ferdinand is afraid that the striker might ask to leave if he can’t win things in North London and has urged the club to start winning things if they want to keep hold of him.

“As a fan, I don’t want Harry to go anywhere. I want him to stay at Tottenham and end his career at Tottenham, but we have to be realistic,” Ferdinand told Stats Perform, as quoted in Goal.

“Players now earn the sort of money that life shouldn’t be a problem for them when they finish playing. So they get to a stage where they achieve that goal and they say: ‘Right, okay’.

“But then there’s a situation where when you finish your career, the biggest thing for me now is looking back at my career and saying: ‘Yes, I did okay, but what have I got to show for it? Where are the medals?’ And that’s what you want.

“Every single player is the same. If Tottenham can match Harry’s ambitions to want him to win most things, then he’ll stay at Tottenham for as long as they can match those ambitions.

“If he feels like they can’t, and they won’t, then that’s the time I think Harry will say, ‘Look, I want to go and win things’. I don’t think people would deny him that opportunity.

“Let’s hope that Tottenham can get to a stage where they’re in a position to do that, because like I said, no one wants to see him leave but I certainly would understand the situation.”

So Les Ferdinand is the latest ex-pro to say he thinks we need to win stuff to keep Kane.

The good news is the media harvest and regurgitate this sort of played-out opinion so regularly that we can expect plenty more through lockdown and beyond!

Harry led us to the Champions League Final, I think if you check the records you might want to correct that statement. Like Les I also urge the club to win things, every day since 2008 but it doesn’t seem to do much good.
