Paul Robinson believes his former club Tottenham will be priced out of a move for Eberechi Eze.
The North London club are not renowned for paying massive transfer fees for players and that is unlikely to change anytime soon. While they are keen on adding more firepower to their attack and are interested in the services of Eberechi Eze, Paul Robinson feels Spurs will be priced out of a potential transfer.
Eze has had a sensational rise at Crystal Palace and on the back of his impressive performances, there is no shortage of interest in him. With three years still left on his deal, the Eagles won’t let him leave for anything less than his £60 million release clause.
Given the amount of interest in him, the fee could be higher than the buyout clause, which will make things very difficult for the North London club.
While speaking to Tottenham News, the former England shot-stopper said: “I’d be surprised if Tottenham met the £60million release clause.
“They’re not renowned for paying huge transfer fees for players. Tanguy Ndombele is, obviously, the record transfer fee and we all know how that worked out.
“They have to get it right. Eze is going to be widely touted, not just in the Premier League, but throughout Europe. If he’s got a £60m buyout clause, I suspect the auction will begin somewhere around £65 to £70m, which would price Tottenham out of a deal.
“I would love to see him at Tottenham. I think he’s a fantastic player and has been a great talent when fit this season. With him and Olise, Crystal Palace have looked like a different team, especially since Oliver Glasner came into the club.
“But if he’s got a £60million release clause, the auction will start higher, and even if Spurs are at the table, I think they’ll be priced out of a deal for him.“
Despite struggling with injury, Eze ended the 2023/24 season with 11 goals and six assists in his 31 outings. While he prefers playing as an attacking midfielder, the 25-year-old is versatile enough to feature on either flank.
His impressive rise and consistent performances have helped him earn a place in Gareth Southgate’s England team for the Euros. Eze is on the wishlist of multiple top clubs which is why Robinson believes the auction for his services will begin for a fee higher than his £60 million release clause.
A potential deal could be worth £65-70 million which would price Tottenham out of a deal. While Robinson would love to see Eze play for his former club but he feels that is unlikely to happen.
