Former Spurs fan-favourite bizarrely admits he’d ‘probably grow weed’ if not a footballer

Former Tottenham star and now a familiar voice on football podcasts and popular pundit Peter Crouch infamously told a reporter who asked, “What would you have been if you weren’t a footballer?” that he would probably be “A virgin” indicating in a self-effacing way, that minus his sporting celebrity, he may well be struggling in certain aspects of his life.

Another erstwhile Spurs man, Rafael van der Vaart cracked an equally controversial funny recently when asked on Ziggo Sport Voetbal alongside former players Wesley Sneijder and Marco van Basten, what ordinary job he might have if he weren’t a footballer, The Dutchman quipped,

“I grew up in a trailer park, so I’d probably run a weed shed. That’s a normal job.”

This light-hearted moment surprised many and drew laughter around the studio. Given The Sun‘s understanding of Rafa’s family circumstances, it may not have been an entirely unreasonable suggestion!

Tottenham, under Ange Postecoglou in his second season in N17, have experienced mixed fortunes, with fans often left looking for consistency from a side that can play unrecognisably in one half of a game, and then play like a Champions’ League-grade side in another.

A player of van der Vaart’s calibre in midfield would certainly go a long way to providing that vital link between midfield and attack.
