Formal offer close: A bid well in excess of £60M could cause Tottenham to pull the trigger

A significantly disappointing winter transfer window turned out to be another major public relations fail for Tottenham, who, it was widely believed, would act big and spend big.

Vinai Venkatesham added to the misery by raising hopes in his extensive programme notes ahead of the window. Talk of ambition was raised, as the shared goal of the executive team, board, and owners (The Lewis Family) was for the men’s team to compete regularly in the Champions League and for major trophies, while elevating the women’s team significantly.

A more proactive recruitment approach was said to be needed, along with a wage structure that supports these ambitions (implying willingness to spend and expand the budget). It was acknowledged that the men’s team had “fallen short” this season, and the club must add more quality, experience, and leadership to compete at the highest level.

Now, the rumours of the club captain Cuti Romero departing in the summer have begun to intensify. The primary rumours revolve around a potential summer 2026 exit from Tottenham.

Trusted Argentine journalist Gaston Edul has reported that Romero will leave Spurs in the upcoming summer transfer window. He has attracted interest from La Liga clubs (with prior links to Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid) and at least one other league. There was reportedly serious interest during the January 2026 window, with clubs coming close to formal offers, but nothing materialised.

Yahoo Sport are now reiterating the interest, and one gets the sense that Romero has now constructed his exit strategy. ENIC would want to make a handsome profit, well in excess of the £60 million mooted for him.

Our view is that footballers only have a true interest in themselves, and that Romero’s biggest love after himself is his country. Expect Spurs to sell and rid themselves of their biggest critic.
