Fabrizio Romano confirms Tottenham are ‘monitoring’ 19-year-old defensive prodigy

Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea continue to monitor Patrick Dorgu and they could return for him next summer.

The North London club have only managed four points in their first three league outings. It hasn’t been an ideal start for Tottenham but they surely did some great work in the recently concluded transfer window. While they significantly bolstered their squad, Ange Postecoglou’s team didn’t make any new additions to their backline despite being linked with quite a few stars.

Spurs were interested in the services of Danish defensive sensation Patrick Dorgu but they couldn’t go ahead with the move because of Lecce’s high asking price. They might not have succeeded in securing his services this summer but according to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham are still keen on his signature and will continue to monitor him ahead of a potential move in the future.

The Italian transfer expert said via YouTube: “He was first of all in the list of Tottenham. One of the players Tottenham considered for the full-back position was Patrick Dorgu. Really appreciated by the club but not a deal to make this summer.

“Why? Because Patrick Dorgu was also on the list of Blue Co, so Chelsea, Strasbourg. The idea was to sign the player for Strasbourg and then potentially move to Chelsea.

“But for both Tottenham and Blue Co, Chelsea, Strasbourg group the deal was considered too expensive because Lecce asked more for than £30m-£35m more than this to get the deal done.

“Lecce believe that Dorgu is a super talent, so Chelsea, Tottenham, several clubs follow him and monitoring him but is still considered too expensive.

“They want to make an investment on him still not spending crazy money because the player still has to develop but Lecce always say more than £30m-£35m for the player this summer and he stayed at the club.

“But keep an eye on this player for the future because I’m sure Tottenham and Chelsea will keep monitoring him.”

Spurs already have Ben Davies and Destiny Udogie in their ranks. They do not really need another left-back but the North London club have preferred signing young players with huge potential and he seems to be an ideal fit as per their new transfer policy. Lecce’s £30-£35 million asking price was the major reason why Tottenham didn’t go ahead with the transfer in the summer and it still remains the biggest hurdle as he is still an unproven commodity in world football.

The North London club will continue to monitor him and could see him as an ideal long-term replacement for Ben Davies. While they haven’t been afraid of spending big bucks on young players, Lecce will have to lower their demands for the deal to go through. More importantly, Chelsea retain their interest in the 19-year-old and they won’t make it any easier for Tottenham.
