Tottenham are preparing for a significant challenge as midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur faces a lengthy domestic suspension due to remarks made about captain Heung-min Son.
As reported by the Mirror, the FA has handed the Uruguayan international a seven-game ban following comments that triggered widespread criticism during a television interview in his home country over the summer.
The controversy began in June when Bentancur, speaking in Spanish on Uruguayan TV, made a joke implying that South Korean people “look the same” when discussing obtaining a jersey from Son.
Although intended as humour, the remark was swiftly condemned as culturally insensitive, prompting the FA to investigate and subsequently file formal charges.
Bentancur was quick to issue a public apology on Instagram after the incident, describing his statement as “a very bad joke” and expressing deep regret for any offence caused. He also reaffirmed his respect for both Son and the South Korean community. In a show of unity, Son publicly accepted the apology, showcasing his support for Bentancur on social media.
FA to hand Rodrigo Bentancur a lengthy ban
The FA’s decision to impose the ban adds to Tottenham’s concerns during a season already marked by injuries and inconsistent results.
The seven-game suspension is a significant blow to Spurs’ midfield, as Bentancur’s absence will force manager Ange Postecoglou to rely on other midfielders to navigate crucial Premier League and League Cup matches.
While Bentancur will still be available for Europa League games, his unavailability for domestic competitions poses a tactical challenge for Postecoglou, who must adjust team dynamics and strategy to maintain stability without one of his key players.
He was the sole goalscorer for Tottenham in their 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town last weekend – Spurs’ 5th defeat of the season already.
They currently sit 10th in the table with 16 points, having won 5 games and drawn 1 while losing 5. Postecoglou is a man starting to feel a little bit of pressure, with the club making one of their worst starts to a campaign.
The injury troubles along with the latest ban only adds to the growing list of problems for Ange, both on and off the pitch.
