ESPN Pundits Split On Mourinho Appointment [video]

By The Boy -

“Careful what you wish for” readers will take succour from this debate. The ESPN panel were discussing Jose Mourinho joining Tottenham as the odds went into absolute free-fall on Tuesday night.

ESPN FC’s Steve Nicol, Craig Burley and Shaka Hislop examine Jose Mourinho’s fit at Tottenham following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino by chairman Daniel Levy.

Burley in particular sees many obstacles to Mourinho taking over for Poch, most notably his tendency to spend on big-name players.

Nicol adds that Spurs better be careful if they bring in Mourinho after he “created chaos” before his departures at both Manchester United and Chelsea.

Shaka, Spurs fans wld bloody LOVE a Europa League title! We need to end the trophy drought and a European trophy of ANY sort would be massively welcome. The only other option is really the league or the CL and we know that that is well out of reach for a couple of seasons even in the best case scenario.

The thing wrong with this analysis is that they are comparing expectations at Man U and Spurs. Man U needed to win the league… Spurs need to qualify for the CL and win any old trophy. There aren’t that many people alive who witnessed Spurs win the league. We don’t expect to win the CL. The situations are very different. If Mourinho gets any trophy at Spurs, especially in his first season, then Spurs fans will be happy.

At this stage it is about rebuilding and showing progress too, of course, but to write off the Europa League is just foolish. I’d love it.
