Tottenham are currently facing ongoing injury challenges, with Micky van de Ven’s absence being a notable setback for the squad.
The 23-year-old Dutch centre-back has been out since late last month after sustaining a hamstring injury during the Carabao Cup Round of 16 match against Manchester City, where he had to leave the game after just 14 minutes of play.
The initial hope was that Van de Ven could make a quick return after the international break. However, recent updates suggest this timeline may be overly optimistic.
Injury expert shares latest on Micky van de Ven injury
Injury expert Dr. Rajpal Brar has provided an assessment of the situation, indicating that Van de Ven’s injury is likely a higher Grade 2 or potentially a Grade 3 tear.
Such an injury level suggests a longer recovery process, which casts doubt on his availability for Tottenham’s upcoming match against Manchester City after the break.
Dr. Brar explained that Van de Ven’s rehabilitation process would involve a careful progression through phases, including strength and mobility work, followed by sport-specific exercises like sprinting.
Speaking to Tottenham News, Dr.Brar said:
“This sounds like a higher Grade 2 or potentially even a standard Grade 3 hamstring tear.
“His return to training will be a progression of strength and mobility training combined with ramping up sport-specific activities, particularly sprinting.
“It seems unlikely that he’ll be ready right after the international break.“
The Dutch defender’s absence has been strongly felt by Spurs, as his defensive strength and consistency have been key components of the team’s backline. His current unavailability poses a challenge as Tottenham prepares for a series of tough matches.
This isn’t Van de Ven’s first experience with hamstring injuries, having dealt with similar issues last season that kept him sidelined for an extended period.
Radu Dragusin has stepped in to cover for Van de Ven, but his performances have shown inconsistencies, emphasising the need for Van de Ven’s return.
Manager Ange Postecoglou will be eager for Van de Ven to make a timely recovery, as his return would be vital for reinforcing the defence.
With challenging fixtures ahead, including an away match at Manchester City, Postecoglou will need to rely on squad depth and tactical flexibility until the Dutchman is fit to contribute again.
