Djed Spence Analysis

“He needed to sort himself out, really. I basically said to him that you can go to the top, or you can go non-league.”

Neil Warnock

There’s a fair amount of information here for us to view, and the trick in my mind is to cut to the chase and give a thumbnail sketch of what is before us now, as the player sits on someone else’s forecourt.

We are not 12 and here to imagine how really brilliant he might become with better players around him and a better team of coaches working with him.

There are so many factors to process, and what I like to do is employ evidence-based facts like a banister on a staircase to help guide us when the light blows.

To err on the side of caution, to take the pragmatic view, is the only way to proceed, or we may as well just call it day and leave up a big sign saying ‘he’ll be electric!’ which can apply to everyone.

The two parties were incapable of getting a deal done prior to Spurs departing for South Korea. This isn’t the end of the world, however, it does point to unhelpful brinkmanship from either Levy or Spence or both.

If we look at the boy’s heat map, we clearly have an attack-minded player, and once we peer a little closer, Spence is not so much defensively suspect, but someone simply not pointing in that direction.

Tactically, it is not a dealbreaker as Conte operates with a backline that accommodates movement, as opposed to a flat back-four, that naturally weakens as it expands to subsidize absences.

Once we begin to focus on the attacking side of Djed’s game, the value is easier to identify.

Naturally, the idea is to accentuate the positives in Spence’s game and so whilst general defensive coaching would be useful, one doesn’t buy a cat and then try to train it to act more like a dog.

Neil Warnock identified the situation, even if he wasn’t willing or able to exploit it at Middlesborough.

He needed to sort himself out, really.  I basically said to him that you can go to the top, or you can go non-league.

I think Steve Cooper is the manager for him, to be honest. He has let him go forward more often, which suits his game.”

If Spurs are to make a success of this young man, then I would suggest they either don’t coach him as they have Ryan Sessegnon (who is neither one thing nor the other), or they primarily focus on the 21-year-old’s strengths.

I have maintained that Spence’s talents at this stage are comparatively modest, and if we look at the outcomes of his final third dribbles, there’s a distinct case for focussing on decision-making and programming the lad with a set of countermeasures that can aid his progress.

The 21-year-old was notably praised for his impressive performances in the FA Cup victories over Leicester City and Arsenal, so there are grounds for a certain amount of belief that Djed can account for himself against tough opponents.

Djed needs, as do many, guidance to convert his dynamism and forward-thinking play into a greater number of successful outcomes. Two goals and four assists are promising, but far from exceptional.

The learning curve will be steep. That’s not a criticism, that’s called a reality that applies to everyone. Awareness when not in possession, defensive positioning, and occasionally poor decision-making are all areas that will need to improve.

Emerson Royal has shown signs of improvement – perhaps Antonio Conte knows where there’s a box of spare bulbs.

bissoma and persicic much improve the first 11 ,everyone’s improving so it’s gonna be a high standard this year.

I have faith in the manager, but Conte will make duff signings same as all other managers and clubs do.
It’s quite a lot of money for an unproven young lad yet to play at the top level. Especially as he’s had problems in the past. Why was he loaned out if he’s so good?
He doesn’t fit perfectly, we need champions league grade players proven at the top. He has potential, but no experience at the top.
Watching him play I thought he was far too one dimensional for an inverted wing back.. 9 times out of 10 he hits the flanks, then stops, cuts back and dummies to cross with his stronger left foot. He doesn’t have much else in his locker.

I’ve seen him a few times and it’s safe to say the potential is there. He’s basically a young Kyle Walker with the identical strengths and flaws. Hopefully he’ll be just as good in the coming years.

Average pass length? I’ve heard it all now. What garbage

Agreed having watched him four times last season.

Disagree, I think he’ll do well.

He’s obviously not the finished article but you don’t get that for 12-20 mil.

I am quite excited by the raw pace and strength. Decent acquisition.

That’s some grade A guano you’re throwing about there, no mistake. Romero, Kulusevski, Perisic, Lenglet, Bentancur, Forster, Bissouma. All quality signings. Yes, there was Gollini and Gil, and the jury is still out on Royal (I still think he COULD get better), but I’d take those and say that’s more than “throwing darts”.

I’m pretty much on board with all six signings so far. They all make sense to me from a squad-perspective, and there are no glaring weaknesses.

Once they are up to speed with Conte’s automations we have a pretty robust 22 to work with.

Will fit perfectly into Conte’s system and so will Richarlison.

You’ll see.

have faith in a proven manager that has finally, finally, been allowed to conduct the orchestra unshackled.

Speaking not pragmatically but purely intuitively, my suspicions are that he’s another waste of time. Fingers crossed – if we do indeed buy him – that Conte finds a 150 watter.

The question is – if he was not from England, and therefore good for our home grown quota – would we really have signed him?

That really is a ridiculous statement. Paratici won 7 straight ‘Serie A’ titles as DOF at Juve and Conte has won 5 major league titles, in the last 8 years, with 3 separate clubs. The idea that these two are “amateurs and charlatans” is utter garbage. Quite to the contrary, for the first time in forever, it feels like we have top pros leading us, with footballing nous, who have a plan and know exactly what they are doing. The turnaround last season and now this off-season, has not happened by throwing f*cking darts at a list of players! It has been engineered by professionals, with meticulous planning and for once Levy has backed them, got out of the way and let them get on with it.

Watched him twice last season and thought, we must sign him.

Bags of (that dangerous word) potential but lucky to have the right managers at the right time.

Only down side for me is his hair style. Shades of Delism?

Harry, you mentioned above brinkmanship between Levy and Spence. It was Middlesbrough conducting the negotiations, no?

This boy is not a nailed on starter, by any means, but to be fair he is not just another ‘speculative punt!’ He is an England U.21 international and has the potential to be a very good player. However, he is raw and has not yet been routinely exposed to a higher level of football. The cup game against the Arse, where Martinelli said he was the toughest opponent he faced all season, is a promising highlight reel though. It will be interesting to see who starts against the Saints on day 1. It also begs the question do we sell one out of Doherty or Royal?

I think it’s obvious that Spurs don’t employ anyone who does a similar and thorough player analysis.
My hunch is that Paratici & Conte are throwing darts at a list of players and hoping that they “work out”.
It’s criminal really. Maybe this is something Ryan Mason could pick up? Give him a laptop and a quiet space to properly research potential talent.
I imagine if you asked Ryan what D. Spence’s average pass length, m, he’d look back at you with a blank expression.
We are being lead into battle by amateurs and charlatans.

The way I look at it is this – If we had a young right-wingback on our books and he had a season like Spence has had at Forest I would be buzzing to get him back and working with Conte. Like Skipp at Norwich.

Mathematics can’t be denied. Only 17 senior non homegrown players are allowed in the squad, so there has to be some future planning. Signing the brightest young English talents from any club has to be part of the strategy.

I think you’re right, his talents do seem relatively modest and so lets hope he can kick on, I mean it’s easy to criticise Levy for taking weeks to get the deal done, but if someone rolled up to my house in a 10 year old Skoda and asked me to pay 100 grand for it I’d probably want to negotiate.

I do suspect he’s gonna seem like a less injury prone Sess, I also expect Doherty to be the primary RWB and maybe this lad can come on instead of Royal when we need someone more forward thinking.

What is unusual is he lack of alternative names being thrown about in the media for this position, which, as I keep banging on about, is crazy considering how critical it is to the whole system.

Anyway, whatever, get him in.
