Levy has to act and correct the huge error of judgment he made in January|opinion

Prior to the Premier League getting suspended Tottenham was in trouble, in fact, we were in free fall, no point denying that and all eyes were on Daniel Levy and his failure to strengthen the squad in previous transfer windows.

We got dumped out of the FA Cup at home by Norwich City, slapped about by RB Leipzig in the Champions League and was on a three-game winless streak in the Premier League.

At the time of the suspension, Tottenham was sitting eighth with Champions League football starting to look remote and even Europa League qualification was looking sketchy.

Why was it going so wrong?

There were the injuries of course and it has to be said, Jose Mourinho tactics and game management were very questionable.

However, more than anything else the one glaring problem was a lack of a proper strike force and the sad thing about that is everyone and their uncle knew that we needed a new centre forward desperately in the January transfer window.

You could go further back, it was always going to happen.

Harry Kane has become injury prone and despite Son Heung-Min being a world-class attacker he was always going to struggle to carry the front-line on his own.

It was utter negligence by Daniel Levy not to address the weakness upfront and the chickens came home to roost, there was no sign that Mourinho was able to overcome the loss of Kane and Son to injury, something he made clear time and again in interviews. In fact, he had a ready-made excuse for the drivel we were watching and he used it to its fullest.

No one knows what is going to happen with the season, will it be resumed or cancelled? The same applies to the transfer window and how that will play out, for example, will any signings be allowed to play if the season is resumed and so on.

What we do know is that at some point after June 1st the window has to open, players will be out contract and clubs will demand the ability to replace those players.

That is the time that Levy has to act and correct the huge error of judgement he made in January.

Too often Levy has been the hurdle with his maddening penny pinching and obsession with living up to his reputation as a hard negotiator and too often the club has paid the price.

He got lucky this time, hopefully, he realises that and will back the manager in the next transfer window even with the expected financial limitations this worldwide pandemic will no doubt impose on most clubs.

We’re looking at an entire season without crowds. This will decimate the PL revenue takings. I suspect there will be very little transfer market activity this summer. Any ideas any has regarding player transfer values is pure guesswork. It’s going to be very stagnant and the free transfer market even more important.
