The bitter-sweet collapse of Ange Postecoglou at Spurs, the arrival of Thomas Frank, all against the promise of Champions League football once more, has left the club in a state of flux, yet again.
One transfer rumour that has generated considerable speculation is the circumstances surrounding Cuti Romero’s future with us. The Argentinian’s last season was blighted by injury, a slow return and accusations on social media that he was much like Giovani Lo Celso, and wanted to play for his country, more than he did for his club.
Light at the end of the tunnel
Now, the well-known football transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano says that all may not be as bleak as it might have first appeared. Speaking on a recent podcast, the Italian said;
“Look, Atletico love the player, so they would love to bring Cuti Romero one day to the club. Also, Simeone is a big fan, but my understanding is that with Tottenham in Champions League, Tottenham with a new project now, with Thomas Frank, I don’t see Tottenham losing a leader like Cuti Romero this summer.
“So it’s going to be very difficult to get the player in the summer transfer window.
“Daniel Levy wants to keep the player at the club from what I’m hearing. Also Thomas Frank sees Romero as a crucial part of this squad from a technical point of view, but also for leadership.
So I think Atletico want to try. They always wanted to try, not only this year, also in the past, but at the moment, I think it’s going to be quite complicated, especially with Tottenham being in the Champions League.
If they lost the final by final in Bilbao, maybe it was going to be a different story. But now, being in the Champions League, I think it’s going to be very tough.”

The pull of Champions League football
Spurs being back at football’s very top table affects everyone, and no more so than the players. Remember, this is for next season’s tournament, for which many sides will not have qualified to participate in.
Cuti Romero couldn’t ask for more, and the frankly bizarre tactics of Ange Postecoglou that left Tottenham uncomfortably close to a relegation battle are now a thing of the past.
Romero certainly has a fight in him, and under Thomas, he won’t be fighting to maintain his reputation; he’ll be looking to enhance it.
A perfect player for Frank
Cuti Romero, as per the rest of the squad, needs coaching and improvement. Sure, he won a trophy at Tottenham, but who did he beat? The 22 losses and the frankly appalling home record will be a concern to all the players involved. A season or two under Frank would not harm his reputation.
