Tottenham’s difficult season hit another setback following their 4-3 defeat to Chelsea, a result that drew sharp criticism from vice-captain Cristian Romero.
Despite taking an early 2-0 lead, Spurs could not hold their advantage, marking their third loss in five matches and leaving them 11th in the Premier League standings.
Cristian Romero takes dig at Daniel Levy
Speaking to Telemundo, Romero expressed dissatisfaction with the club’s lack of progress, indirectly pointing to Daniel Levy and management as key factors. He highlighted that while clubs like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea continue to invest and build sustainable success, Tottenham have been unable to address long-standing structural issues.
The Argentine noted the repeated changes in players and coaching staff but emphasised that these shifts have done little to solve deeper problems within the club.
He said:
“Manchester City fight every year for the tournament, Liverpool too, Chelsea is strengthening all the time despite the results… these are things to imitate. You have to realize that they are failing at something.
“It has always been the same in recent years. Every year, players come and go, and even the coaching staff changes, but everything remains the same.
“I hope they realise who is truly responsible for this so they can move forward because this is a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, can easily fight for the title every year.”
This criticism comes during a particularly trying period for the team, with injuries adding to their woes. Key players, including Romero, Micky van de Ven, and first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, remain sidelined. The defensive instability has been a significant factor in Spurs’ recent struggles, further complicating Ange Postecoglou’s efforts to stabilize the squad.
As vice-captain, Romero has been a vocal leader both on and off the pitch, and his pointed remarks reflect growing frustration within the dressing room.
It is perhaps the first time a player has taken a dig at the club hierarchy. The last time someone within criticised the club’s ambitions, it was former manager Antonio Conte, who went on a crazy rant and was sacked soon after. Will Romero’s latest comments get him in trouble with the club remains to be seen.
