Tottenham have received a significant boost with the return of vice-captain Cristian Romero to training following a prolonged injury layoff, as reported by The Standard.

The 26-year-old Argentine centre-back has been sidelined since December due to a muscle injury, which kept him out of 11 key matches during a turbulent period for the North London club.

Romero’s absence has stretched across nearly four months, leaving him unavailable for an astonishing 29 games this season.

His last appearance came in a clash against Chelsea in December, where recurring fitness issues forced him to leave the pitch prematurely.

Romero’s return comes as a timely boost for manager Ange Postecoglou, who has been dealing with an unprecedented injury crisis that has left 10 first-team players sidelined.

The defensive line, in particular, has been significantly impacted, forcing Postecoglou to rely on a makeshift central pairing of Radu Dragusin and summer signing Archie Gray.

While the likes of Dragusin and Gray have stepped up admirably in Romero’s absence in recent games, the return of the Argentine brings invaluable stability, leadership, and experience to the backline.

Since joining Tottenham on an initial loan deal from Atalanta in August 2021, Romero has established himself as one of the team’s most dependable defenders. Spurs made his move permanent the following year, securing his services on a contract that runs until 2027.

Ahead of the 2023–24 season, Romero was named vice-captain, a testament to his influence on and off the pitch.

Despite his injury woes, Romero has managed to leave his mark this season, making 14 appearances across all competitions and even scoring a goal. His defensive contributions earlier in the campaign showed his importance to the team.

His performances at Spurs have attracted interest from European giants Real Madrid who wanted to sign him in the summer and remain keen to secure his services.

Romero’s return from injury is a timely boost for Spurs who are currently navigating through a very tough period in the Premier League. His presence will also come as a huge boost for Tottenham in their pursuit of a trophy, as the club set to go to Anfield to play the second-leg of the League Cup semi-final with a one goal advantage.
