Pape Sarr and Yves Bissouma have become ‘liabilities’ for Tottenham Hotspur this season.

That’s according to pundit and former Chelsea and Scotland midfielder Craig Burley, who was commenting on the duo following Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal.

Spurs took the lead at the Emirates in the 25th minute through Son Heung-min. However, just 19 minutes later, they were 2-1 down.

First, Dominic Solanke scored an unlucky own goal as Radu Dragusin diverted the ball onto him from an Arsenal corner, before Leandro Trossard dispatched an excellent finish to give the hosts the lead just before half-time.

Bissouma was particularly poor on the second goal, losing possession to Thomas Partey, who quickly set Arsenal on the break.

He and Sarr barely laid a glove on Arsenal in the first half and both were hooked at the break, replaced by James Maddison and Brennan Johnson as Ange Postecoglou tried to inject some attacking thrust into his side.

Both midfielders have turned in a host of subpar performances in the Premier League in recent months as Spurs have slumped to 14th in the table.

The duo — who cost Spurs £39.6m combined — have come in for heavy criticism from Burley, who believes the midfielders are hindering Spurs rather than helping them.

“He takes off [Pape Matar] Sarr and [Yves] Bissouma who have fast become liabilities for this manager and this club,” Burley told ESPN (via TBR). “Bissouma with his performances and his discipline and Sarr with his discipline and his indiscipline, got a booking for, I think kicking the ball away and he’s always prone to a challenge, a rash challenge.”

What next for Spurs?

With just two wins from their last 11 Premier League matches, Spurs travel to struggling Everton on Sunday desperate for all three points.

Should they lose, the Toffees would move just four points behind Spurs, who currently sit only eight points clear of the relegation zone and a massive 14 points adrift of the Champions League places.

The Lilywhites then turn their attention back to Europa League matters with an away trip to Hoffenheim on Thursday.
