Paul Merson believes that “Spurs rely too much on Harry Kane and Son, and lately Gareth Bale”, according to his Daily Star column. Now I have no idea if we were to ask Merson for a more nuanced explanation if he might be able to give us something spellbinding to consider.
The fundamental problem with what this Sky regular says is that ALL football clubs tend to rely upon their forward line players, who are frequently recruited at considerable cost, in order to win games. The opposite of this relationship that Merson looks down upon would surely then produce teams that then only rely on fluke goals, such as goalkeeper kick-outs that bounce bizarrely or what have you, and produce a goal.
It is perfectly normal to look to certain players to do certain things for their teams. It is impossible to believe that Merson was doing much more than throwing stones. As I suggested earlier, very little of what Merson says stands up too much in the way of scrutiny.
Paul Merson: “I think Arsenal are favourites against them this weekend. I really do. If both teams play to the best of their ability I think Arsenal win the game.

My paper boy has a higher I.Q.
Alan Hutton and Jamie O Hara comments to follow no doubt.
I guess we’ll see what happens in the game, probably end up a 0-0 or something.
Merson is at the lower end of the common denominator when it comes to attracting attention to his punditry. He obviously doesn’t like Spurs but he his musings on the game could be those of a drunk.
I am by no means trying to be cruel about his own problems in the past. However he spouts off like he’s still on a bender!
