Tottenham Hotspur may have strategically laid the groundwork for a significant transfer next summer, based on recent statements from Real Betis officials.
On transfer deadline day, Spurs facilitated Giovani Lo Celso’s return to Real Betis on a four-year deal worth €5 million.
This move may have also opened the door for a future signing, as Tottenham reportedly secured an option to sign U.S. midfielder Johnny Cardoso in the next summer window.
Real Betis president Ángel Haro confirmed that Spurs holds first refusal on Cardoso, with a fixed fee of €25 million. This places the Lilywhites in a prime position to secure the talented midfielder if they choose to trigger the clause when the transfer window reopens.
Manu Fajardo, the sporting director at Betis, further acknowledged that Lo Celso’s transfer was instrumental in shaping this potential future deal for Tottenham.
The director told DAZN (via Marca):
“(Lo Celso) has played an important role in terms of his (Cardoso’s) rights for the future.”
“Leaving next summer? It would depend on Tottenham and other offers that come in.”
Cardoso joined Real Betis in December 2023 on a five-year contract. He made his debut in January 2024 against FC Barcelona, playing in a 2-4 defeat.
Last season, the defensive midfielder made 19 appearances across La Liga and the Conference League, contributing a goal and two assists.
Spurs fans will undoubtedly keep a close watch on this development, as Cardoso could become a valuable asset for the club in the seasons ahead.
