Glenn Hoddle has likened Brennan Johnson’s emergence as a goalscoring winger to that of Raheem Sterling.
Johnson joined Spurs from Nottingham Forest in 2023 and scored a respectable but unspectacular five goals in 34 appearances during his first campaign at the club.

This season, however, the Wales international has exploded into life with nine goals in just 19 appearances across all competitions; at least three more than any other Spurs player.
Johnson’s latest strike put Spurs 2-1 up in an eventual 2-2 draw against Roma in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

Brennan Johnson: The new Raheem Sterling?
Just like his other eight goals this season, Johnson netted against Roma inside the box, while he has also netted three inside the six-yard box.
Spurs legend Hoddle has likened Johnson’s new-found penalty area instincts to those of Raheem Sterling, who jumped from seven Premier League goals in 2016/17 to 18 in 2017/18 during his Manchester City days — going on to become a clinical goalscorer from then on.
“I have got a player who started doing that at Man City and started scoring loads of goals from those type of positions. Sterling,” Hoddle said on TNT Sports after Johnson’s goal (via TBR).
“Sterling started to do that and everyone thought he’s a goalscorer now, and it wasn’t outside the box, it was all in between that six-yard box and the penalty spot and that is what Johnson is doing for Tottenham.”
Sterling has scored 123 goals in 384 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal combined to date.
If Johnson can even come close to that total, he’ll firmly establish himself as a Spurs and Premier League legend.
Spurs will hope for another goal from Johnson when they host London rivals Fulham this Sunday.
