‘Best player’, “…Tottenham are interested” – BBC man claims Ange wants to bring versatile attacker to Spurs

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham have been strongly linked with a move for Nottingham Forest attacker Brennan Johnson.

The departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich has left a void upfront for Tottenham, and fans are growing anxious whether the club can secure a suitable replacement before the deadline.

So far Ange Postecoglou has put his faith in Richarlison upfront but the Brazilian has failed to impress. He has continued his poor form from last season and has looked average in both the Premier League games.

If Spurs fail to sign another striker, it will be worrying considering they will have lost a striker who scores 30 plus goals for them every season and then failed to find someone who may not score as many but would still be able to contribute substantially with the goals.

They have been linked with many strikers in the recent weeks including Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson who is also being eyed by Chelsea.

However, it has been reported that the player will choose Spurs over Chelsea as he is more likely to get more playing time there compared to Chelsea.

And BBC Sports’s Chris Sutton believes if Spurs sign Johnson, it would be a huge set-back for Forest as they would be losing a player who has been vital to their setup.

Sutton highlighted Johnson’s versatility, youthfulness, and ability to fit into different positions as reasons why Tottenham would be interested in him.

While Ange Postecoglou continues to work with the existing squad, signing a player like Johnson would allow him to shape the team to his vision and style of play.

Speaking about the versatile attacker, Sutton said:

“It’s going to absolutely kill Nottingham Forest and Steve Cooper, I don’t know what he would be thinking.

“He can’t be in a hurry to get rid of Brennan Johnson however much money Nottingham Forest get.

“I get why Ange Postecoglou would be in for Brennan Johnson. I think we’ve sort of had a look at the Tottenham team in the first couple of games.

“You can see the progress Postecoglou has made but it’s not really his team as such, he’s inherited a large part of that squad and he will want to bring his own players in that fit his way of playing.

“He’s young, he’s versatile, he can play a number of positions, so I get why Tottenham are interested.

“I still think they’re going to have a fight on to stay in the Premier League so losing arguably your best player, I thought [Morgan] Gibbs-White was good for them last season as well, that’s a bit of a no-no isn’t it?”

Johnson is one of Nottingham Forest’s most important player and losing him would be huge loss for them but at a reported valuation of £50m, Forest will probably consider a sale as a logical choice.

Nottingham Forest’s financial concerns, related to Financial Fair Play regulations, might prompt them to consider selling Johnson at a reduced price.

The pressure to raise funds before the end of the transfer window could influence their decision-making process
