Ben Jacobs: ‘Spurs would love’ striker valued at £70M but Ange won’t panic buy

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to Ben Jacobs, Tottenham are expected to remain active in the transfer market in the final days of the window as they work to resolve outgoing transfers and potentially bring in a new striker.

The departure of Harry Kane has created a need for a replacement, but manager Ange Postecoglou is not looking to make panic buys and is focused on finding the right fit for his squad.

Among those linked include Jonathan David, Gift Orban, Santiago Giminez, Lautaro Martinez and Dusan Vlahovic.

Writing in his column for Caughtoffside, Jacobs stated that ‘Spurs would love’ Inter Milan’s £70m rated striker Lautaro Martinez but Inter Milan have told potential suitors he is not for sale.

Meanwhile, Jonathan David, who was a target under Fabio Paratici’s leadership, had been considered as a potential replacement for Kane.

However, Jacobs claims that the landscape has changed, and the asking price for David from Lille has reportedly risen to €65m, putting off many potential suitors.

And while links with Gent striker Gift Orban have been gaining momentum over the last week, Jacobs states that Spurs are yet to table a formal bid.

He wrote:

“Spurs are going to be busy between now and when the window shuts because they have some outgoings to resolve to ensure the squad side is manageable.

“As far as replacing Kane is concerned, Jonathan David was a concrete target under Fabio Paratici, but so much has changed since then. It won’t be easy doing business with Lille either with so little time left in the window. David’s asking price is now as high as €65m, and this has put off many interested clubs.

“Gent’s Gift Orban has also been considered, although Spurs are yet to table a formal bid. Orban has a lot of qualities to like but is ultimately unproven at Premier League level.

“Spurs would love Lautaro Martinez, but Inter have been telling suitors all summer he’s not for sale. And I don’t think Spurs will move for Dusan Vlahovic either despite some summer links.

“What is clear is Postecoglou doesn’t want to panic buy, and the type of profile he is looking for is different to the type of players Paratici was looking for when Antonio Conte was still at the club. That’s why directly replacing Kane (if that’s even possible!) may take some time.

“I can still see Spurs adding a striker in the final days of the window but the question is whether they save some of that Kane fee in order to take their time for a flagship signing in the windows that follow, or spend big now.”

The challenge of directly replacing Kane may take some time, and with the transfer window approaching its final days, it makes sense that the manager does not want to make any panic buys.

Who Spurs will bring in before the window shuts and whether it is a big money signing or not remains to be seen.
