Ben Davies has offered his view on Rodrigo Bentancur’s punishment for comments made about Tottenham Hotspur teammate Son Heung-min.

Bentancur has been slapped with a seven-game domestic ban and a hefty £100k fine as a punishment relating to comments made about teammate Son prior to the 2024/25 season.

“An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview,” an FA statement read.

“It was alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 as he acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute. It was further alleged that this constitutes an “aggravated breach”, which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin.

“Rodrigo Bentancur denied this charge, but the independent Regulatory Commission found it to be proven and imposed his sanctions following a hearing.”

As a result of his suspension, Bentancur will miss Premier League fixtures against Manchester City, Fulham, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Southampton and Liverpool, as well as the EFL Cup quarter-final meeting with Manchester United.

However, he will be free to face AS Roma and Rangers in the Europa League during that time.

Unsurprisingly, Bentancur’s Spurs teammates have been asked about his ban. Ben Davies was the first to respond.

“I read the news this morning, probably just like everyone else did. It’s something that it felt like at Spurs it’s been handled in-house and now it’s been handled outside as well,” he told reporters at a pre-match press conference ahead of Wales’ Nations League clash with Iceland (via Football.London).

“I think that as a group, as a team at Tottenham, we’ve all put a line under it and moved on, but I think ultimately, it’s important that we realise that these kind of things need to be looked at with the seriousness that it has been. As far as I’m concerned, and the team’s concerned, there’s a line under it now and we move on.”
