Tottenham could secure Lille midfielder Angel Gomes for just £3 million in the upcoming January transfer window, according to club insider John Wenham.

The former Manchester United academy graduate, valued at €28 million, has garnered significant interest due to his consistent performances and versatility in midfield.

With Gomes’ current contract expiring next summer, Spurs are reportedly exploring a potential cut-price deal to bring the England international back to the Premier League.

Gomes, who joined Lille in 2020 after leaving Manchester United, has developed into a dependable playmaker under Paulo Fonseca.

His displays in Ligue 1 and for the England national team recently have further boosted his reputation, making him an attractive option for Tottenham.

Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham suggested that Spurs could secure a pre-contract agreement in January and then negotiate an immediate transfer for a minimal fee.

He said:

“Once Spurs have a pre-contract agreed, they could negotiate a deal with Lille.”

“I’d suspect they would offer £3 million to make the deal happen in January.

Alternatively, they could just wait until July and sign him for free.”

He added that Gomes would “tick many boxes” as a Tottenham signing, describing him as a player aligned with the club’s transfer strategy:

“Gomes is a recent England international and someone I could see Tottenham moving forward with as a club signing, rather than someone Ange Postecoglou necessarily wants.”

“He would tick many boxes in terms of the kind of club signings Spurs have historically made.”

Angel Gomes’ career journey: From United to Lille

Gomes began his career at Manchester United, joining the club’s academy at six. He made history in 2017 as the first Premier League player born in the 2000s to feature in a match, debuting under José Mourinho.

Despite showing promise, Gomes struggled to cement a place in United’s senior team, making just 10 appearances before leaving for Lille.

In France, the 24-year-old has thrived, evolving into a well-rounded midfielder capable of excelling in multiple roles.

His performances earned him an England call-up, with Gomes featuring prominently under interim manager Lee Carsley.

Tottenham’s hierarchy, led by Johan Lange and Daniel Levy, is expected to spearhead negotiations for Gomes.

The midfielder fits the profile of a smart, long-term acquisition, aligning with the club’s history of securing young talent with high potential.

While it remains unclear whether Spurs will move for Gomes in January or wait for a free transfer in the summer, securing the player for as little as £3 million would represent a bargain deal for the North London club.

The coming weeks will reveal whether Spurs can strike a deal and add another promising player to their ranks, reinforcing their ambitions under Postecoglou’s leadership.
