Tottenham have been hit with yet another setback in a season riddled with injuries, as Wilson Odobert, their summer signing, faces an extended spell on the sidelines.
The 19-year-old winger recently underwent surgery on his right hamstring and is reportedly not expected to return before March, further compounding Spurs’ struggles to maintain depth in their squad.
During a pre-match press conference ahead of the Premier League fixture against Man City, manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed that Odobert’s absence will stretch across a significant portion of the campaign.
He acknowledged the challenges this presents, particularly as the team is already managing injuries to key players, including Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Richarlison.
While Postecoglou hinted that January reinforcements might be considered, he also noted that the decision depends on the recovery timelines of other injured players.
The Australian coach said (via Football London):
“Obviously Wilson [Odobert] will be out for a fair chunk of the season.”
“So, we’re a little bit short there but it just depends if by January we get two or three back we may not need to but we’ll kind of see as it goes.”
Odobert joined Spurs from Burnley in August, signing a five-year contract that came with high expectations. However, the French winger’s potential has been largely unfulfilled due to recurring injuries.
He has managed just 182 minutes across five appearances in all competitions, leaving fans eager to see more of his talent.
The season has been particularly unkind to Odobert, as he previously missed seven games earlier in the campaign due to hamstring issues. Since late October, he has missed an additional five matches, and this latest setback means he will be unavailable for months to come.
For Tottenham, Odobert’s prolonged absence is a significant blow to their attacking options. Postecoglou has already had to adjust his tactics to account for a string of fitness problems across the squad.
The club’s priority now is ensuring Odobert receives the support needed for a complete recovery. Spurs remain hopeful that his return later in the season will provide a much-needed boost to their attacking lineup.
