Tottenham face another crucial Premier League challenge as they prepare for an away clash against Ipswich Town. In his pre-match press conference, manager Ange Postecoglou provided an important update on the squad’s injury situation, particularly regarding vice-captain Cristian Romero.
The Argentine defender has been out of action since December due to a hamstring injury, missing 23 matches across all competitions. His absence has been a major setback for Spurs’ defence.
Ange Postecoglou provides Cristian Romero update ahead of Ipswich vs Tottenham
Postecoglou revealed that Romero’s rehabilitation is going well, but the club is being cautious in determining the right time for his return. He stressed the importance of ensuring both Romero and fellow defender Micky van de Ven regain full match fitness before rejoining the squad to prevent any further injury concerns.
The manager is eager to have them back in the lineup for the long run as Spurs push to salvage their season.
As quoted via Football London, Postecoglou stated:
“Yeah, he’s [Romero] had that and it’s going well. He’s in a good place. So, like I said, with him and Micky, it’s just picking our moment now. I’m really keen to get them back and have him back for the rest of the year. We’ve got a really good sort of period coming up where I think we can manage that where they’re back, they’ve had good weeks of training with us, so that when they do come back in, they’re in a good place.
“So, yeah, he’s still going well. It’s going well for him and he’s in a good place. I’m really keen to pick the right moment with him and Micky to make sure we’ve got them for the rest of the season.”

Despite his injury struggles, Romero remains a vital part of Tottenham’s defensive setup. However, recent reports have linked him with a potential summer exit, especially if Spurs fail to secure European football which is highly likely. With the defender under contract until 2027, Tottenham faces the challenge of convincing him to stay and be part of their long-term vision.
Since arriving from Atalanta in 2021—first on loan before making the move permanent—Romero has established himself as one of the club’s key players. His aggressive defending and leadership qualities earned him the role of vice-captain ahead of the 2023–24 campaign.
Prior to his injury, Romero had made 14 appearances this season, including a standout performance in a 4-0 victory over Everton in August, where he also found the back of the net. (Transfermarkt)
His return could provide Spurs with a much-needed defensive boost as they aim to regain momentum and climb up the league table.
